Tonia Reeh is restless. "Different Steps To Stumble" is the fourth album of
her one-woman electronic music show Monotekktoni, that noisy rock band without
guitars. After hardly more than one year, this new piece is to follow "Love
Your Neighbour? No, Thanks!" (SR021) on August 19, 2008. It's still the same,
it's completely new again. Again, she recorded, mixed and produced everything
by herself, working in a new place after being evicted from of her old
environments. äDifferent Steps To Stumbleô is still more marked by extremes
than Monotekktoni's earlier releases. But again, it brims with strict passion
and angry dedication. You can not expect anything less.
"Different Steps To Stumble" is released on CD and LP as well as in different
digital formats on almost every relevant platforms.
On August 5, 2008, "Where's The Hole" is out as a digital single. Monotekktoni
is on tour in September, October and November. Monotekktoni is available for
interviews and niceties.
Dance on the high wire, despite knowing it's going to snap. You will stumble,
you may even fail. But you have to start again, you have not finished making
this experience. Take one step after the other.
Once more, a fourth time, Berlin-based artist Tonia Reeh becomes Monotekktoni
to make use of her chunky old synthesizers, to throw herself against that
strange world, to defy arbitrariness and callousness. It will not stop,
however different the framework. Things fall apart, that is how it feels. Our
points of reference become blurred, get lost or lose their meaning. Everybody
is talking about gentrification, but what does it mean to be affected? To be
expelled from your living-space, your work-space, the district you grew up in,
to give up what shaped you. A new quarter, a new place has to be filled with
life. And you will wait for the very same process. For the constant up and
down.
Retreat to a place that is not negotiable! A castle of noise and distortion,
rattling beats and wild movements. Protect the essence: The ingenious, the
candor. The music on this album plays with the very extremes. Electro noise
and ruckus on one side, utterly beautiful harmonic movements on the other.
Elaborate constructions meet the deliberate acceptance of mistakes and
improvisation. Boiling anger, just enough to start laughing. Schadenfreude is
freude at its best. Even more so if it's you falling off the ladder. And then,
finally, all those creaky and rasping layers connect and become
straightforward songs.
It is not what it seems. This is still not pop music. This still goes the
whole hog. This will not be easier. Wrong time, wrong place, you will be told
again and again. A ritual, almost. In the end you will wish you had done it
differently. You will keep moving. Take one step after the other.
