With all of the promising bands in today's independent musical landscape, there
are few that can throw the kind of guitar-driven punch like Nashville-based
indie rock trio Apollo Up. Fronted by singer and guitarist Jay Phillips, and
rounded out by bassist Mike Shepherd and drummer Jereme Frey, Apollo Up delivers
an energetic live show that features Phillips' forceful vocals and guitar
acrobatics, and songs that rival anything ever recorded in the indie rock,
post-punk or post-hardcore genres.
Now Apollo Up has also captured that same live energy in the studio, with
Chariots of Fire, their second effort on Nashville-based Theory 8 Records, due
for release on June 13. Chariots of Fire is the follow-up to the critically
acclaimed debut, Light the End and Burn It Through but features a more polished
and mature approach to songwriting along with cathartic guitars, emotive vocals
and raw production. Phillips, the band's primary songwriter, sums it up best by
saying that "we've either hit our stride or are getting a lot closer to it."
Yes, Apollo Up has definitely hit their stride, and they hope to garner the kind
of attention that will put them on a nationwide tour, or at least give them the
fuel necessary to keep making music. With infectious songs including "Walk the
Plank" and "Cut Up," Chariots of Fire should do just that.
Apollo Up has showcased at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, and they
have shared the stage with the likes of Shipping News, Bloodthirsty Lovers, Matt
Sharp, The Pink Spiders, and Decahedron.
