Honestly this could be a somewhat confusing release for some people, as
there are two distinctly different bands featured on this compilation
even though the packaging only bears the moniker of Natas. Nevertheless,
the appeal of this band does cross a broad spectrum, so if you are an
old school death/thrasher, but also like hardcore punk, then I urge you
to read on.
As with the other AreaDeath releases IÆve covered, I often listen to the
second disk first to hear the bandÆs beginnings and this comprehensive
two cd set was no different for me. Disk two kicks off with the first
two demos from Natas, which is some of the most savage and punky
death/thrash IÆve come across. After a barrage of double bass, a lean
hardcore groove urges the politely-titled ôWhoreö into your eardrums.
The remainder of the ôOutcast of Societyö demo follows in similar suit
with maniac vocals accompanied by hardcore grooves and thrashy blasts.
Riff-wise, there is a fun mix of chuggy breakdowns and punked out metal,
all tuned to low B, giving the material a seriously sludgy feel. The
guitar solos are particularly demented, sounding to me like recordings
taken from inside a stainless steel beehive (listen and youÆll know what
I mean).
The second demo contains more of the same, so you get thirteen songs of
this crazy stuff. I strongly feel that both of these demos would be of
great interest to collectors of early death metal and the tape trading
scene as they are pretty unique recordings despite the standard dismal
sound quality of rehearsal demos. Anyone familiar with the early works
of Master and Hellhammer would probably get a real kick out of these
guys' early sound.
For the sake of chronology, the next thing I listened to was the ôThink
What You Wantö mini- album, which makes up the first nine tracks of disk
one. Much had changed for the band between the time of their demos and
their debut vinyl release, and after dropping their singer they would
even change their name to Notus. Stylistically, the band still has the
same root sound, but now lean even more heavily towards outright
hardcore. All three remaining members now share vocals, giving them
little more variance in that department. You can really hear the changes
in the re-recorded ôWhoreö, which still packs quite the punch, actually.
Lyrically, instead of the guts, gore, and metal prevails subject matter
of old, the band now seem somewhat more socially aware, but occasionally
resort to the kind of tough guy hardcore posturing and homophobia that
ran rampant in the scene in the eighties. ôSet Us Freeö is a personal
favorite from this release with heavy stop and start chords, catchy punk
riffage, and particularly chastising vocals. Fans of D.R.I. will
probably gobble this stuff up as their influence is very prominent at
this point (as was the case with pretty much all crossover from this
time).
As for the rest of the tracks, they are all mostly punk rock with the
metal influence dumbed down even more, so your enjoyment may depend
solely on your appreciation of that genre. YouÆll start to hear a lot
more Agent Orange in these songs as well as an unfortunate low point
with a dire cover of the Discharge anthem ôDrunk With Power.ö It is
interesting to hear a metal band slowly turn into hardcore, as most
bands of this stripe were doing just the opposite in those days.
AreaDeath did a great job as usual in regards to the packaging of this
release, with interviews, photos, and flyers from the days of old to go
along with the cool new artwork covering this set. Anyone who is
interested in Wild Rags Records or the original deathcore style (before
that tag lost all of its merit) should sample Natas/Notus as well as
fiends of death metalÆs first wave. And for more maniac
metal-turned-blistering hardcore, I must also recommend the crazy as
hell N.Y.C. Mayhem.
