The split opens with "Dhaaegthi" by Sickrites. It seems this midtempo
track is all about aggravation of the atmosphere. Seven minutes of
almost pure suspense. The first riff (by the way, very haunting) is
tenaciously combined with such a drum pattern.
It is likely that the quality of the sound is not very bad. However,
when somewhere in the second quarter of the track, the manner of
execution of the riff changes (as a result, there is even a feeling that
the second guitar enters), it's getting messy. You realize that there is
a lot of fizz in the guitar sound. I guess the song was recorded a long
time ago and on the home computers of course. Horth (who made mixing)
tried his best, as usual maybe, but no studio would be able to hide that
kind of the "primary source sound" (home computer I mean).
But what's the suspense without denouement? Throughout the song, I
waited for the Sickrites' signature guitar solo to sound. But it never
came. Meanwhile, the solo would create the apogee of the composition, if
this song is the only one on the release. On the album, by the way, such
track would be a throwaway song, just "for quantity". The keyboards
"solo" in the ending is primitive, gloomy and fundamental, as well as
the bridge, emphasized by the keyboards in the middle of the track. But
these passages only exacerbate the absence of the solo.
It's just like David Fincher's Zodiac: you wait when the best bit
starts, when Zodiac appears on the screen, but he never shows up. Well,
Zodiac can not appear, because he is Zodiac, but the solo on "Dhaaegthi"
is another matter entirely. If another substance of the composition is
in this "disappointed expectation", then I don't like it.
In the song by Pestilentia ("Prophecies of Doom") the atmosphere isn't
whipped up û it's already there from the beginning. The atmosphere,
which I would describe as "rip and tear", with a touch of omnivorous
anxiety. This may be a contradiction, but this is how I heard
Pestilentia this time. Well, I had a strange feeling that with the
exception of following their credo "not to give the listener to relax"
they are not very similar to themselves here. The riffs by and large û
at the very least the second one and another towards the end of the song
û are reminiscent of black metal by Ulver's standards, when they were
the very thing to express above-mentioned "omnivorous anxiety" plus "rip
and tear".
Although the whole "Prophecies of Doom" song elapses without the rhythm
change, and there are no insertions "for the sake of variety" (a short
shout in clean voice towards the end of the song you can count out),
this track isn't perceived to be monotonous û it is an unputdownable
song, composed with cold calculation. Also the quality of the recording
is much better.
