ôWhatÆs the Truth?ö is my first encounter with S.O.B. and I have to say
I like what I hear. I would consider this album to be straight
grindcore. ItÆs just got that attitude that they were going to do
whatever they wanted on this album and didnÆt care if people liked it or
not.
There are only 10 songs on this album and the longest song is only 2:26.
Which means this album is SHORT. This is just another reason why this
album seems like pure grindcore to me. Now, the songs contain a lot of
what is to be expected of a grindcore band. Lots of punk influenced
riffs, lots of thrash, and of course, blast-beats. The vocals are just
odd. I canÆt really describe them, kind of guttural. They fit in very
nicely with the grindcore and punk atmosphere. They are just yelled into
a mic with what sounds like some kind of muffle on them.
The songs themselves don't vary all that much. Punk riffs, pounding
blast-beats, and indecipherable vocals. Short and to the point grind
from beginning to end. One bonus to the way this band writes songs is
that not every song is fast fast fast. They usually have variation is
the way the drums compliment the riffs. Now, every song is fast but they
take breaks in the speed. It gives this album more variation and is
easier to listen to.
Production on this album is great. The bass is loud and helps carry the
guitar through. The guitars arenÆt really heavy but they sound really
good. ItÆs kind of like a punk guitar sound but a little heavier. The
drums are perfect. Not too loud but loud enough to understand and hear
what they are doing at all times.
Overall, this album is very good. If youÆre a fan of grindcore, buy this
album. If not, then donÆt.

S.O.B. has always been one of those unknown bands who possess so much
power that no one ever knew to begin with. They were one of the best at
their genre... But which genre am I talking about: their punk side or
metal side?
Well, on this album, S.O.B. decided to take the metallic road and leave
their some of their punk roots. This is grindcore, which as you should
know is a branch-off of punk, but its super metallic. They are indeed
trying to imitate their friends in Napalm Death by incorporating even
more blast beats, illegible vocals, distorted guitars and faster tempos.
S.O.B. have always been illegible I know, but the vocals on this release
isn't as broken English as their previous release "Don't be Swindle". To
many people, they would say that S.O.B. didn't change at all but the
truth here is that they have, and this is their experimentation with
metal. In short, this is grindcore with thrash moments (or as I see
S.O.B., "thrashcore").
On this specific release, just know them to be a poor man's Napalm
Death.
Don't get me wrong; this is obviously not a full out metal album. Its
metallic indeed, but it still maintains a very punky sound and a really
huge "fuck you" attitude still. Their music is stereotypically sloppy
like punk and the vocals are screeches and grunts. In my humble opinion
though, I think they've tried a little too hard in breaking into a metal
sound.
On one side, the groove and rhythms are wonderfully catchy and
memorable. For a late 80's album, the production is pretty superb.
There's enough room for everything to be heard, hence you can hear
practically all the instrument movements. S.O.B. seems to have a charm
for creating minimal yet catchy music and this formula never fails.
Songs like "Over the Line" scream greatness; it has great monstrous punk
riffs mixed with some metal-inspired drumming (double bassing in this
case). This is one of those songs on the album that showcases S.O.B.'s
metal side and punkier side. "Meddlesome Heart" on the other hand is an
all out grindcore assault with constant blast beats and screams. "Look
Like Devil (Part II) Hell" is a song which presents yet another side of
S.O.B. which is their thrashier side with metallic riffage. There are
"gang vocals" as well on this song (which, in the hardcore/punk world is
more than one person singing the chorus line). There's an incredible
catchy bass line somewhere in the middle of this song. Everything else
is pretty much either grindcore or just plain metallic sounding punk...
On certain songs though, you can definitely hear a cry of "let's be a
metal band!" Songs like "Unseen Terror" is a great grindcore tune...
just you can tell that the microphone was covered with something to give
it a terrible muffle sound. Most of the songs have this quality; you
could hardly hear the vocals over all of the music. This song really
makes that quality obvious and it really ruins the whole song (the break
in the middle though is an awesome punk riff). It's too muffled out and
I don't think that it's because of bad post-production mixing. S.O.B.
just wanted to give it a "metal" aspect by making the vocals sounding
more "deathier" as Napalm Death have. "Look Like Devil..." is pretty
weird to hear because it's punky thrash riffs with this super low
grunting style of singing. This isn't good in S.O.B.'s case because the
vocals show a huge lack of energy (hence why I feel they're just trying
to be metal). Other than this, you already know that S.O.B. made their
instruments more distorted which showed them trying to become metal.
So after all of this comparing, what can be said about S.O.B.'s "What's
The Truth?" release? Well, it's certainly not a bad release, but it's
also not the best album in the world. I must say though that this CD
really presents some classic grindcore (and I mean the way grindcore
should be without being death metal or not so metallic sounding). This
is a release worth checking out if you really want to hear some classic
grindcore and one of the pioneers of the genre. If you want some far
more superior classic grindcore, then just turn to Napalm Death's "From
Enslavement to Obliteration"... no argument there.
