July 2020 saw Meanwhile's third release feature Dutch icon,
Roger Martinez with a three-track EP that was a soothing tonic
for troubled times. Now returning to Cosmic a trio of remixes
come from Jamie Stevens, Paul Deep and label head-honchos, GMJ
and Matter.
An Australian legend with ARIAS to his name and a host of
production credits for the likes of Bedrock, All Day I Dream and
Replug, Jamie Stevens makes his Meanwhile debut with a typically
impressive reworking of Cosmic Drum. Finding a new rhythmic path
with trademark ingenuity and craftsmanship, a laid-back groove
paves the way for a heavily effected and pulsating lead melody
to wend its way across the eight-minute track. Making innovative
use of Martinez's original components, Stevens has created an
elegant reworking that builds through rich harmonic layers
transforming the original into a dynamic and highly original new
remix.
Born and raised in the sprawling Buenos Aries metropolis, Paul
Deep has spent his entire teenage years and adult life immersed
in the underground dance scene. An accomplished DJ with a
penchant for deep and progressive house with a splash of techno
thrown in for good measure, his original music for Nick Warren's
The Soundgarden and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat, sit neatly
alongside remixes for Beat Boutique, MNL and Mango Alley.
Another Meanwhile debutant, Paul Deep retains the rich rhythmic
collage of Cosmic Drum as the familiar melodies from Martinez's
track also waft across proceedings, coated in reverb and
filtered tape delays. Evolving into a new textured groove of the
Argentinean's making in the second half, a glorious array of
gated sounds add new sonic character to a seething, hypnotic
remix, full of South American flavour.
Continuing their assault on the underground dance industry
through solo and collaborative guises and a plethora of timeless
progressive house anthems, GMJ and Matter once again return to
their label to provide another high-calibre offering. Remixing
80s the Australian duo create a trademark club-friendly rhythm
that provides the perfect framework for a glorious array of
sonic textures and soundscapes that emerge out of Roger
Martinez's original components. The distinctive meandering lead
line of the original ripples across the ten-minute piece before
a rasping new bassline and spine-tingling synth lead spring to
life at the breakdown. Continuing into the third movement with
ease, the combination of freeform melody and hypnotic rhythmic
backdrop create the perfect match for an ingenious remix that
sees GMJ and Matter extend their production repertoire with an
easy skill.
Three new remixes of Roger Martinez give Cosmic a whole new
perspective from under Southern Hemisphere skies.
