Few figures in contemporary music have influenced their respective
fields the way Frankie Knuckles has revolutionised dance music.
Worldwide, DJ's and clubgoers utter his name with a mixture of awe
and reverence. The legendary DJ who helped invent house music in
the late 1970's has gone on to be one of the world's most sought
after remixers during the past decade, crafting hit tracks for
dozens of artists.
Nicknamed "The Godfather" by legions of admirers, Frankie Knuckles'
(yes, it is his real name!) 1991 debut album, Beyond The Mix, raised
his status yet another notch, spawned three No.1 smash dance singles:
"The Whistle Song", "Rainfalls" and "Workout". With his ear-grabbing
debut, Frankie, who doesn't sing or play any musical instruments,
proved that a producer/writer/arranger can indeed establish himself
as an artist in his own right.
While growing up in the Bronx during the 1960's, his earliest musical
influences were the jazz artists of his older sisters musical collection
- including Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan and Herb Alpert. After studying
commercial art and costume design in his late teens, Frankie found his
true calling: manning the DJ booth, he began spinning at Manhattan's
Better Days in 1971, going on to DJ at the Continental Baths where he
teamed up with childhood friend Larry Levan of the renowned Paradise
Garage.
Frankie's move to Chicago in 1977 marked a pivotal event in modern
popular music, as he immediately began participating in the creation
of a new music form, called "house" music (its name is derived from
Chicago's famed underground club Warehouse, where Frankie drew huge
crowds of devotees), it has since become the dominant staple of dance
clubs worldwide, with Frankie playing a huge role in its explosive
popularity.
Frankie eventually moved into the recording studio, where his production
and remixing skills soon equalled his genius in the DJ booth. Following
his 1987 return to New York to DJ at The World, Frankie's deeply -
orchestrated remixes of dance singles (under the aegis of Def Mix
Productions) have continued to earn hits for a slew of artists. For all
his achievements as a remixer, producer and artist, Frankie still feels
most at home when spinning records and filling dancefloors - whether it
be in New York, Chicago, Miami or Europe.
His towering status as a producer, remixer and DJ is already a fact;
look for Frankie Knuckles to attain new levels of success with this
album, Sessions Six.
