Release Notes:
David & the CitizensÆ songs speak earnestly of the
great subjects in life - love, loss, and despair -
through buoyant melodies & beautifully crafted pop
songs. The bands dramatic live show displays their
more upbeat, partyside, but on record their music
comes across as compassionate, thoughtful, and
often heartrendingly bittersweet.
The band was formed in 1999, when David Fridlund
moved from Stockholm to Malm÷, bringing his
four-track with a bunch of songs. He gathered some
people and soon there was a full band.
In September 2001 started the recordings of their
debut album which was released in March 2002. The
record was unanimously praised by critics for its
spontaneity and lust for life combined with real
gravity. The single ôSong Against Lifeö became a
hit single and the video was number one on MTVÆs
Nordic chart for several weeks. The album also
climbed the charts and soon received an ôIndie Gold
Recordö in Sweden.
In the spring of 2003 the Band once again teamed up
with producer Jens Lindgσrd (Franz Ferdinand, St.
Etienne etc) to make their second album ôUntil the
Sadness is Goneö. The CD was a big success in
Scandinavia and received a Swedish Grammy
nomination (Best Pop Group).
The band is currently working in the studio to
complete their 3rd studio album û the first on Bad
Taste Records. All the former elements are still
there, focused on the songs and melodies but with
more interest in darker, colder and more artificial
sounds. The acoustic guitar has now been replaced
by an electric and David & the Citizens has turned
from the joyful pop band to a dark rock band. Fans
wonÆt be disappointed - DavidÆs voice is there to
comfort. The new album will be released all over
Europe fall 2006.
"Their sound is a sunny, spastic, orchestrated,
multi-layered flavor of indie pop music, not too
far removed from Neutral Milk Hotel, with a similar
hint of darkness and melancholy in amongst the
sweet melodies and harmonic vocals... I personally
think it's pretty fantastic" - Music for Robots
