│ Right before I left Boston last year, this pair of dudes from │
│ Rhode Island started throwing parties at the Enormous Room, │
│ which is basically a bougie loungey type place that caters to a │
│ weird clientele made up of equal parts MIT students, frat │
│ brohams and after-work shirt-and-tie dudes "unwinding" by │
│ drinking a few overpriced cocktails. Anyway, point is that I │
│ was a bit hesitant to attend one of their monthlies at first, │
│ partially because of the location, and partially because they │
│ had a goofy-ass name: Certified Bananas. Eventually, I went │
│ down to the Enormous Room to see them spin, and I saw the │
│ light: the normally reserved (and I mean RESERVED) Cambridge │
│ crowd was getting the fuck down to what these dudes were │
│ putting up, dancing on top of tables, clogging up the aisles so │
│ that the drink girls couldn't even get by, actually making │
│ people STAND IN LINE outside. When I met the dudes, I realized │
│ that the name was totally fitting, because they really are a │
│ couple of goofy-ass dudes (in a good way) who just happen to │
│ know their shit front-to-back, and can absolutely murder a │
│ party. After releasing internet-only mixes for the better part │
│ of 2005, the Bananas have decided to go the mixtape route with │
│ Sprang û call it their coming-out party. Frantically paced and │
│ cleverly titled with a tasty food theme ("Orange You Glad," │
│ Knuckle Sandwich," etc.), Sprang showcases the pair's love for, │
│ well, everything, ricocheting across their record collections │
│ from ODB to Natasha Bedingfield and back again. To give you an │
│ idea of where these guys are coming from, they've recently spun │
│ alongside Caps & Jones, Ghislain Poirier, Nick Catchdubs and │
│ more. Not to mention heavy cosignage from Rub DJ and cranky │
│ motherfucker extraordinaire Cosmo Baker û and for the record, │
│ getting Cosmo to cosign your mixtape is about as tough as │
│ getting Young Jeezy to make a D.A.R.E. commercial. When you put │
│ this CD into your iTunes, the genre comes up "unclassifiable." │
│ I can't say I disagree. Give it a shot. 60+ minutes total. │
