kid loops (aka jamie lexton) - since the release of 'alien
resident' he has remixed and recorded for a myriad of
people including r&s's drum and bass subsidiary all good
vinyl. 'back to the lab' was his highly acclaimed filter
follow up and nme vibes single of the week. he is also
featured here under his 'local zero' guise.
box saga - their second filter single, 'blackfly', is
featured here. it has become an early classic on the label
cropping up in sets by people as diverse as justin
robertson, danny tenaglia, hardkiss and gilles peterson.
also included is an unreleased track, 'porknow', under
their 'violet' ('burn the elastic/central pro nyc') moniker.
the fire this time - 'at least american indian people know
exactly how they've been fucked around' was taken from
an album released on rykodisc/extreme 'dancing on john
wayne's head'. featured on the track are chuck d, angela
davis, scully, the mad professor and various hindu/tamil
chants. the mix on the compilation is previously
unreleased.
djq - paul flynn came to our attention via the 'east end
tracks e.p' released on the gemini label from glasgow, a
fusion of detroit production styles and party rocking
grooves. we tracked him down and signed him up. the e.p.
'we are one' became our second essential new tune on pete
tong's radio one show, and no euro cheese released yet!
also featured here is the previously unreleased track 'urban
hustle'.
sunship - the alter ego of ceri evans, one time brand new
heavy and remixer/session player to many. 'the 13th key',
featured here with a stunning black science orchestra
remix, was an early dorado classic, but after its release,
ceri disappeared into straight jazz. he's now back on filter
with the 'come true e.p.' and 'initiation' on this
compilation - inspired by some of the finest detroit techno.
underwolves - ned kelly and professor stretch's debut for
the label - 'nine lives' certainly caused a bit of a stir,
too fast and frantic for some but loved by the likes of
fabio. from its twisted incessant break beat to its lush
jazzy chords, the track hooked anyone who liked their drum
and bass with a bit of a difference.
chicane - a recent addition to the filter roster, they came
to our attention via the 'offshore e.p.' on cyanide records.
leo elstob and nick bracegirdle, have come up with an ambient
gem in the classic cafe del mar style of steve reich. the
pair are set to record an e.p. for filter by the end of 1996.
d*note - matt wienevski's ground breaking act are set to
release their third album 'coming up' soon. the track
featured here 'waiting hopefully' is in a special remixed
form by simon 'faze action' lee.
