Num Skull has changed drastically over the eight years between this
album and the excellent Ritually Abused released in 1988. Have they put
out another thrash masterpiece this time around? Well not really, this
album bears no resemblance to their thrash roots .The only original
member returning on this album is Tom Brandner which explains why this
sounds like a completely different band. Also in the span of 8 years
metal has drastically changed for the better or worse, it all
depends.This album is good for occasional head banging but that's it
though it's not really good for anything else. The riffs played here are
really not memorable at all. Num Skull's earlier works are clearly
rooted in thrash and speed metal but this sounds like they listened to a
bunch of Cannibal Corpse and Deicide and tried their best at copying it
without any of the technicality of originality of those bands.
Now the guitars play rather bland and uninteresting riffs throughout the
entire album. They really don't grab the listener's attention or do
anything worth noting. They barely utilize any tremolo picking, soloing
(only 6-7 solos on the entire album), or scale based/rhythmically
challenging riffs. I don't mind the little use of solos, but for that to
be effective the riffs have to be good, on this album though they are
not good, bands with great riffs that didn't really utilize solos that
often were Deeds of Flesh and Incantation. They could get away with it
though here not really. On this album it's mostly just bottom string
chugs. Also the riffs coupled with the muffled production on the album
make most of the riffs sound exactly the same throughout the entire
album. The guitar solos and riffs on Ritually Abused are far superior
technically, musically, and energetically than the guitar playing here.
It's quite a shame considering Num Skull released Ritually Abused 8
years prior to this.
The drumming on this album is also incredibly bland and generic. I mean
it gets the job done but there is not much variety in the drumming. What
you'll hear in the drumming department is occasional blasts, very small
use of double bass, and no fills. Really there are no fills at all. This
guy's drumming is like an early version of Paul from Cannibal Corpse
very bland and not very creative drumming. I don't think there were any
toms used on this album, or even the china cymbal.
The bass is somewhat audible but it doesn't have the same presence that
it had in Ritually Abused. Ritually Abused bassist Rob Charrier threw in
very creative solos and added a lot to the music while here Mike
Eisenhauer just plays along with the guitars and that's that. He's
audible in the mix but there are no cool sounding bass solos and nothing
really to add to the music.
The vocalist sounds like a poor man's version of George "Corpsegrinder"
Fischer. He can go pretty low but he doesn't have any crazy high pitched
screams, nor is he very rhythmical. George Fischer can growl/sing
incredibly fast and he is clear in his delivery, this guy doesn't. Plus
vocally he doesn't come close to Skips (original vocalist) demented
sound. Skip sounded unique, when he growled his vocals sounded like he
swallowed razor blades and then tried to sing with blood pouring out of
his mouth. This guy on this album sounds like a stereotypical death
metal vocalist you would find on craigslist.
Finally the production is the last thing that needs to be discussed. I
mean how does a demo from 1986 (Num's the Word) sound better than this
by a mile? The production on Num Skull's demo and Ritually Abused LP
everything is crystal clear from the drum hits, guitar riffs, and bass
tone while here everything is very muffled and muddy sounding. That is
unacceptable that a record from 1988 could sound so much better from the
same band than one released in 1996. I mean it's not like we are
comparing Metallica to Darkthrone because obviously Metallica could
afford better production and studio equipment. But here it's the same
band and one record sounds completely unbalanced while another sounds
great.
I would skip over this record if you're looking to get into Num Skull
and instead listen to Ritually Abused. The only thing that this album
has over Ritually Abused is brutality but that is because of the much
lower guitar tuning and more growl based vocals. Other than that
Ritually Abused dominates over this album in every way. Yes, this is
more brutal but Ritually Abused has better song writing, better riffs,
better drumming and is far more frenzied and violent than this album is.
Ritually Abused just oozes violence and malevolence from it, this just
reminds me of a Cannibal Corpse cover band. Num Sull should've changed
their name for this album I mean seriously none of the original members
except Tom played on this record and it sure didn't improve Num Skull's
playing or songwriting at all. Final Verdict, get Ritually Abused
instead the only highlight track on this album is the opener, really
everything else isn't worth your time. Also that venom cover at the very
end is laughably bad. Overall, this album falls flat and is very boring
for a death metal album.
