Having just reviewed Savoy Brown, I should be favoring this album,
though HustlerÆs outing High Street doesnÆt come off with the same
timeless swagger, where the band appears to be lost in a seminal two
years, incorporating and fusing far too many sounds and ideas that often
do not feel as if they own them, rather that Hustler are borrowing
generously from all that was happening just a few years earlier.
This was another of an endless number of records that got left in my
apartment, simply sitting in my collection for half a lifetime.
HustlerÆs influences are worn on their sleeve, drawing much from Rod
StewartÆs vocal delivery, though oddly inspiring to be a band that
didnÆt exist yet, that being Bad Company, while often dressing in
matching outfits as did the Bay City Rollers (perhaps thatÆs a British
thing), complete with some of the worst guitar face soloing of all time.
ItÆs not a bad album, itÆs simply that looking back the records is
entirely dated, often cinematic and as confusing as the album art,
artwork that certainly could be taken as a come to life version of Savoy
BrownÆs 1971 Street Corner Talking. All of this suggests that Hustler
arrived too late to the party, that had they made the scene a few years
earlier they may have made a bigger splash, though by 1974, those smooth
easy feelings of the Eagles, along with the astoundingly flawless
productions of Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller and of course Bruce
Springsteen were sweeping the charts; not to mention Steely Dan, where
listeners were looking for something a bit deeper and bit more
intellectual and resounding.
While all of the above is certainly true, HustlerÆs sort of rockinÆ
boogie blues had been replaced by other bands such as the Doobie
Brothers, who took the same flavored numbers, songs like ôBlack Water,ö
and delivered them with a bit more grace, ease and sonic inspiration.
Dare I suggest this is the only album featuring arm-wresting on the
cover, so the band should be given points for that aspect alone.
