in beauty there is a rather big chunk of
melancholy because beauty fades and is as
transitory as any existence on this planet.
But true beauty will remain.
Such are the associations that swell through
body and brain like surf when the cherished
listener discovers the third album by
Millenia Nova, NARCOTIC WIDE SCREEN VISTA.
The duo which are Munich-based buddies
Mathias Neuhauser and Michael Meinl presented
their atmospheric timeless pop on two
predecessors, Nice Mysterious Heavy Stuff
(1997) and Slow E-Motion Sight Seeing (1999),
turning out gems which, in retrospect, still
seem mere foreplay for NARCOTIC WIDE SCREEN
VISTA, Millenia Novas masterpiece. Making
more than 70 minutes playtime, stoical and
regular, with not a single boring note in
between, with every note capturing the magic
of the moment.
"We wanted to bring about a major change with
NARCOTIC WIDE SCREEN VISTA, compared to the
two other albums", admits Mathias Neuhauser
frankly. "We made the rhythm best faster and
increased the speed of sound", continues the
34-year-old multi-instrumentalist with the
constant pensive smile hanging around his
lips. "In addition, there are practically no
samples, everything was properly recorded.
But the most crucial aspect of the stilistic
change is that the singing voice gets to play
a decisive role on "NARCOTIC WIDE SCREEN
VISTA".
The singing voice: Mathias and Michael are
self-proclaimed musicians "with not-so-hot
singing voices" (Meinl) and managed to
deplete the treasure-trove of vocal acrobats.
Vivid-singer Thomas Hanreich performs on a
total of four songs, and others, like Alison
from the Maltese grop Combo The Beangrowers,
Slut-voice Chris Neuburger, Kelli Ali of
Sneaker Pimps fame chipped in. Not to
mention the voice of the one who did it all
and did it first, Iggy Pop.
"We couldnt quite believe our luck that Iggy
Pop would come in on Rockicide", admits
Michael Meinl. "We simply went down with a
severe case of megalomania one night and
decided we wanted to record a proper duo with
a proper big star. So we got in touch with
Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, and Iggy Pop.
The first two never got back to us but Iggy
spontaneously did since he knew our song Im
Dead which a New York radiostation was using
as a jingle. He liked the song and it did
not take him long to agree to work with us."
Mathias Neuhauser embarked on the long shlep
to Miami to meet with Mr. Pop and record the
song. Reward for all these efforts:
Rockicide is one of the high points of
Millenia Novas new album.
A high point among high points because this
album goes from climax to climax, thanks to
the other guesting vocalists which also did
their best to make NARCOTIC WIDE SCREEN VISTA
a passionate player full of deeply-felt
atmosphere. "We gave the singers as much
freedom as possible. All the lyrics are
theirs because we wanted them to feel what
they are singing and identify with it. And I
think", says Michael Meinl, "you can feel how
dedicated they are."
Aside from the vocal parts, the fact that all
instruments are played for real, makes the
album special; the string sections were
recorded, rather extravagantly, with the
Munich Modern String Quartet.
Instruments were supplied by Marthis while
his 27-year-old partner-in-crime
painstakingly worked the computers. First
ideas for NARCOTIC WIDE SCREEN VISTA dated
back to 2000 in Spain where a number of songs
were later recorded. The vocals were
recorded primarily last year in Millenia
Novas own studio in Munich.
"This time around, finishing the album took a
long time", Michael Meinl admits. "But it is
a record that allows a direct peek into our
souls. We can recognize ourselves perfectly
in every song on NARCOTIC WIDE SCREEN VISTA.
That this peek into our soul shows quite a
melancholic side is something we were not
aware of initially but it feels true
nevertheless. We dont listen very much to
music in our down-time but when we do it is
stuff like Coldplay, Radiohead, or Tears For
Fears, also soundtracks by Henry Mancini or
even Supertramp and XTC. None of it exactly
cheerful stuff but all of it charged with
atmosphere. Which is also what our own music
is all about."
It is what Mathias and Michael have wanted to
do in Millenia Nova ever since the band was
founded in 1996. "Mathias was introduced to
me by a mutual friend", remembers Michael
their first meeting, "and the experience of
slaving away together on a commercial jingle
developed into a close friendship and we
decided to form a band, although we come
from very different musical backgrounds. I
was into house and techno while Mathias first
got into ska and punk and later into pop.
But it may just be this controversial musical
background which creates the electric field
that makes the Millenia Nova sound unique."
Best buddies, they have also embarked on a
permanent creative symbiosis with the result
that each of their three records has an
original sound while adding a new dimension
to what Millenia Nova is. "With NARCOTIC
WIDE SCREEN VISTA, it was very important to
us to have the music sound international",
says Mathias Neuhauser, "to be a calling-card
for the whole world." They more than
fulfilled what they set out to do: NARCOTIC
WIDE SCREEN VISTA embraces the listener,
worldwide, gentle and firm and never lets him
go. Never again.
