The release last year of the new Godzilla movie seems to have
spurred everyone into producing a collection of classic
Godzilla themes. However, this one from Varese is better than
most and has at least been selective about which pieces of
music to include. Akira Ifukube's original theme is an
insistent hypnotic piece which has dated little since the
Fifties, particularly in the treatment given here. This theme
recurs through the films scored by Akira Ifukube, but this
only accounts for eight of the thirteen films which stretch
from 1954 (Godzilla and Godzilla: King Of Monsters) through to
1995 (Godzilla vs Destroyer). The styles of the other
composers are very different with Reijiroh Kororu supplying a
far gentler approach for Godzilla 1984 and Masaru Satoh
writing much lighter scores for Godzilla vs The Sea Monster
and Son Of Godzilla, but probably my favourite is Kohiichi
     Sugiyama's Jaws-sound-a-like Godzilla vs Biollante,
particularly the track 'Super X-2'. The last track seems to
have a slight surprise in store with a heavy metal track after
the end of an Ifukube reprise - certainly not my taste!
Ignoring this glitch, this is an excellent compilation and if
you do not know the Godzilla music, do not be put off by the
plastic toy image of the films - the music is good
