Nacidas en el Estado mejicano de Coahuila, a Socorro y Rosina
Navarro siempre les gusto la musica y desde ninas cantaban en casa
para amigos y familiares, principalmente los generos de moda en los
anos 40, es decir, boleros, mambo y, posteriormente, cha-cha-cha.
Comenzaron a lograr algunas modestas actuaciones y en 1948 se
presentaron a un concurso para jovenes talentos organizado por una
emisora radiofonica, que ganaron, lo que les valio el derecho a
participar en diversos programas. Gracias a ello poco a poco fueron
ganando en popularidad, ficharon por discos Musart, grabando algunos
singles, y para principios de los anos 50 ya salian de gira con las
principales estrellas del panorama musical de Mejico. Se convierten
en celebridades cuando, gracias a su gracia y presencia se les da un
papel preponderante en el programa televisivo mas importante del
pais, "Comicos y canciones" (1956), e incluso mas adelante tendran
su serie propia, "El cafe de las Navarro". Por supuesto el
surgimiento del rock & roll las influyo notablemente y "Comicos y
canciones" fue testigo de esa evolucion, si bien el rock tendia a
quedar matizado por orquestas que parecian evitar que su musica
pareciese rompedora o rebelde. Al fin y al cabo eran mujeres y la
sociedad no parecia aun preparada para unas rockeras pioneras, tanto
en este genero como en la television. Fueron fichadas por la
poderosa discografica RCA que les edita un album de versiones de
du-dua estadounidense y rock & roll suave, entre cuyos tema cabe
destacar "16 toneladas" o "Sh-Boom" (1958). Incluso es simpatico su
"Mamy", un tema que podria hacer reventar en mil pedazos el diminuto
cerebro de mas de una feminista descolocada en el tiempo. Luego
llego "El relojito" (1959), version del "Rock around the clock" de
Bill Haley, puede ser considerado el primer autentico rock & roll
grabado por mujeres en Mejico. Pero su mayor exito fue el mambo
"Pepe" (1960), retrogado en musica pero rompedor y escandaloso para
la epoca en cuanto a su letra. Las hizo conocidas en toda
Hispanoamerica, sobre todo en Argentina, donde triunfaron a lo
grande, llegando sus ecos a Europa. Tra un timido intento de probar
fortuna en el cine, se pasaron tambien a los bailes de moda con
"Ron, coca-cola y twist" (1961) o "Twist del perico" (1962), entre
otros. Pero las nuevas modas hacen que musicalmente se vayan
alejando del rock & roll hasta abandonarlo completamente, pasandose
a ritmos tropicales como la bossa nova, sobre todo. La fundacion de
una familia practicamente las retiro del mundo del espectaculo, y
Socorro murio el ano 1995 de un infarto cuando solo tenia 64 de
edad.
Las Hermanas Navarro (Torreon, 1944 - h. 1965). Born in the Mexican
state of Coahuila, Socorro and Rosina Navarro always liked music and
since they were little girls they sang at home for friends and
family, mainly the fashion genres of the 40s, that is, boleros,
mambo and, later, cha -cha-cha They began to achieve some modest
performances and in 1948 they took part in a competition for young
talents organized by a radio station, which they won, which earned
them the right to participate in various programs. Thanks to this,
they gradually gained popularity, they signed up for Musart records,
recorded some singles, and by the beginning of the 50s they were
touring with the main stars of the music scene in Mexico. They
become celebrities when, thanks to their grace and presence they are
given a preponderant role in the most important television program
in the country, "Comics and Songs" (1956), and even later they will
have their own series, "The Coffee of the Navarrese". Of course, the
emergence of rock & roll influenced them remarkably and "Comedians
and songs" witnessed that evolution, although rock tended to be
tinged by orchestras that seemed to prevent their music from looking
groundbreaking or rebellious. After all, they were women and society
did not seem ready yet for some pioneering rockers, both in this
genre and on television. They were signed by the powerful RCA label
that publishes an album of versions of du-dua American and soft rock
& roll, among whose theme is worth mentioning "16 tons" or "Sh-Boom"
(1958). Even his "Mamy" is sympathetic, a subject that could burst
into a thousand pieces the tiny brain of more than one feminist
dislocated in time. Then came "El relojito" (1959), version of "Rock
around the clock" by Bill Haley, can be considered the first
authentic rock & roll recorded by women in Mexico. But his biggest
success was the mambo "Pepe" (1960), retrograde in music but
groundbreaking and scandalous for the time in terms of his lyrics.
He made them known throughout Latin America, especially in
Argentina, where they triumphed in a big way, reaching their echoes
to Europe. Tra shy attempt to try their luck in the movies, they
also went to the dances with "Ron, Coca-Cola and Twist" (1961) or
"Twist of the parakeet" (1962), among others. But the new fashions
make that they move musically away from rock & roll to abandon it
completely, moving to tropical rhythms like bossa nova, above all.
The foundation of a family practically removed them from the world
of entertainment, and Socorro died in 1995 of a heart attack when he
was only 64 years old.
