Tune's companion piece is a bloodthirsty wade through English
folklore.
This youthful Oxford duo have come a long way in their first
five years together and are rounding off an exceptionally busy
year with their third release in the last 12 months. First was
their pivotal role in the big band Bellowhead, whose E.P.
Onymous came out in the spring, closely followed by the third
album from Spiers & Boden proper, which û as its title Tunes
suggests û was mostly instrumental hornpipes, jigs and reels.
'Songs' is the companion piece and gives free rein to Jon
Boden's singing, which is something of an acquired taste but
certainly seems to suit the material. With the exception of a
canny cover of Tom Waits' Innocent When You Dream, these are
all traditional songs, which apparently ôwork best when sung
in the pubö. Just about every one features a murder, incest,
heartbreak or all three, backed by Boden's yawing fiddle and
guitar and John Spiers' lurching squeezeboxes. You'll need a
drink... - HMV Choice
"...they tackle everything with such natural zest and vibrancy
it sounds refreshingly contemporary and original" - Mojo
