A fan tried to buy a round of drinks for the five members of the
Plagiarists after a recent show, but they had to turn down the
overture. For now, the 20-year-old indie-rockers from St. Olaf
College in Northfield will have to enjoy the adoration of the
rock-and-roll lifestyle without the libations.
But talk with lead singer Eric Wilson and one senses that the
attention is enough to keep them going, after a series of
fortunate events has brought the band enough local recognition to
keep them busy and happy.
They are scheduled to appear on radio station Drive 105's
Homegrown show, according to Wilson and their label, and are
enjoying a steady stream of gigs ranging from their home turf at
St. Olaf to the all-ages Garage teen center in Burnsville to the
regular rock joints that abound throughout Minneapolis.
Just weeks ago they accomplished a landmark for new bands
everywhere, recording their first full-length album, on local
label Afternoon Records.
"It makes us feel a lot more legitimate to ourselves. At first we
just felt like a couple of guys playing music, but now we have
something solid under our belts," Wilson said.
The album, "Veto!" features thick layers of crunchy guitars, the
occasional soft synthesizer line and vocals that sound as youthful
and earnest as you would expect from college sophomores who
suddenly have a lot of things going right for them. Wilson said
the band aims to write catchy and accessible songs, but with
enough edge to keep them from melting into over-poppy mush.
The Plagiarists signed with Afternoon Records after winning a
battle-of-the-bands competition at St. Olaf College, after which
label manager and contest judge Ian Anderson, another St. Olaf
student, approached them about making an album.
"They have a really good idea of the line between street-cred-
indie and catchy enough so that it's accessible to pretty much
everyone," Anderson said.
The band members sacrificed their spring break to sit in a studio,
drilling through 10 tracks in 10 days to finish the album, which
sounds well-produced despite the tight deadline.
Wilson said the band plans to spend summer vacation playing as
many shows as possible, with three lined up this month and a
weeklong tour of the Midwest in late August. (startribune.com)
