Release Notes:
Love Arcade's so-called candy rock would suck if not for the fact that the
members don't seem to take themselves or the music too seriously. There's Rock
Lite guitar parts, jaunty rhythms and choruses that take up residence in your
brain and then proceed to trash the hell out of it like a kid who's sans the
'rents for three weeks.
At times you're reminded of Weezer, in particular when the collective hits upon
its more ambitious material, and even the throbbing heartbeat of The Killers but
Love Arcade ù from the great state of Michigan ù is a way, way, way better than
Mr. Metrosexual 2005 and his crew.
Vocalist Sno White moved around the stage like a rock star gone awry ù a guy who
working an arena crowd in his mind and as a result making the audience go along
with him.
He also picked up his guitar, slammed out some faux metal leads here and there
and repeated, numerous times, "Wichita, Kansas." It was hard to tell at times
whether he was having a laugh or lashing out but the smooth professionalism he
displayed during the songs and the smile that broke out across his face when his
bandmates did something cool, suggested that it was the former.
White and the rest of the lads locked in and rocked out through tunes such as
"Keep It Coming" and "Candy," tunes that walked the line between bubblegum and
slacker pop and teetered between funny and sweet and funny and kinda dirty.
Nice touches and exactly the kind of thing that'll make 14-year-old girls in
Ypsilanti feel like they're pulling one over on their parents.
It was hard to feel the maximum rock with the crowd numbering in about the low
teens, if you subtract the other bands that were in attendance and members of
radio, film and the filthy press but Love Arcade made it possible and at the end
of the set, rock lovers were calling out for more.
There's plenty to suggest that Love Arcade will probably mature nicely and grow
into the slacker pop mold and that the band might take its place beside the
likes of Portugal The Man and Sunny Day Real Estate.
Point is: Love Arcade is way, way, way better than a bunch of 18-year-olds from
Detroit have the right to be.
