█░█ In physics, volume is the amount of space an █░█
█░█ object occupies. But how do you measure the █░█
█░█ physical volume of something as intangible as █░█
█░█ music? Especially when the music in question is █░█
█░█ being produced by South African live hip hop █░█
█░█ outfit Tumi and the Volume. The Volume comprises █░█
█░█ musicians David Bergman (bass), Tiago Paulo █░█
█░█ (guitar), and Paulo Chibanga (drums) û performing █░█
█░█ alongside emcee Tumi Molekane. Collectively, the █░█
█░█ three musicians generate a synergy that is █░█
█░█ conveyed as innovative musical pastiches and █░█
█░█ explorations. With an acute sense of observation, █░█
█░█ and a God-given gift for translating experience █░█
█░█ into rhyme, Tumi rounds up the collective █░█
█░█ artistry of the group. █░█

█░█ All talented artists in their own right, and with █░█
█░█ their own musical careers well on the way, it █░█
█░█ might have been coincidence that brought them █░█
█░█ together to create Tumi and the Volume û but the █░█
█░█ group's growing international fan base is more █░█
█░█ likely to consider it destiny manifest. █░█

█░█ Hip hop has its origins in the storytelling █░█
█░█ rhythms of African griots, and as globalisation █░█
█░█ returns the music to its roots in a roundabout █░█
█░█ way, Tumi and the Volume bring a contemporary █░█
█░█ South African flavour to the genre with █░█
█░█ influences from rock to hip hop, dub to █░█
█░█ Afro-jazz. Representative of post-apartheid South █░█
█░█ Africa û black, white, and brown skin tones with █░█
█░█ a dash of different faiths û the members of the █░█
█░█ group are equally as diverse in their musical █░█
█░█ backgrounds, influences, and expressions, and are █░█
█░█ equally responsible for the composition of the █░█
█░█ music they perform. █░█

█░█ The result has been a phenomenal success û in █░█
█░█ 2003, approximately one year after forming as a █░█
█░█ group, Tumi and the Volume were nominated for █░█
█░█ three South African Music Awards. One of the █░█
█░█ nominations was for a recording of a live show █░█
█░█ performed at Johannesburg's popular Bassline █░█
█░█ venue. In 2006, Toronto-based label District Six █░█
█░█ Music (www.districtsixmusic.com) will be █░█
█░█ releasing the group's eponymous follow-up album █░█
█░█ throughout North America. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ Starting at the grassroots level with audience █░█
█░█ recognition throughout South Africa, Tumi and the █░█
█░█ Volume have managed to spread their music █░█
█░█ throughout the world. In their first year █░█
█░█ together Tumi and the Volume performed at venues █░█
█░█ in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban, █░█
█░█ and were also asked to perform at the 2002 Metro █░█
█░█ Music Awards. Their talent has led to them █░█
█░█ appearing on stages throughout Africa and Europe, █░█
█░█ and alongside the likes of The Roots, The █░█
█░█ Cardigans, Coldplay and Massive Attack at the █░█
█░█ Quart Festival in Norway. In 2002, at one of █░█
█░█ their very first performances as an official █░█
█░█ group, they opened for Phat Joe in South Africa. █░█
█░█ 2003 saw them performing at the Tuks Rag Show, █░█
█░█ the Metro FM New World Music Festival and █░█
█░█ supporting international acts Relax (Holland), █░█
█░█ Positive Black Soul (Senegal) and Blackalicious █░█
█░█ (USA). 2004 had them touring throughout Europe, █░█
█░█ including in the Republic of Ireland, the United █░█
█░█ Kingdom, Belgium, Norway, and Greece. Back home, █░█
█░█ they supported the Black Eyed Peas on their South █░█
█░█ African tour. █░█

█░█ Building on the success of two previous visits to █░█
█░█ Canada (in February and September 2005), Tumi █░█
█░█ and the Volume are back by popular demand. In █░█
█░█ February 2005, the group was invited to headline █░█
█░█ alongside Somali-born K'Naan for the African Way █░█
█░█ tour. At the time, they were relative unknowns in █░█
█░█ North America, but managed to leave a lasting █░█
█░█ impression on the several hundred people who █░█
█░█ attended their performances. Those shows were the █░█
█░█ spark that started a wildfire of word-of mouth █░█
█░█ recommendations, and later on that year Tumi and █░█
█░█ the Volume returned to Canada to warmer weather █░█
█░█ and a much hotter reception. During the June/July █░█
█░█ 2006 tour, the group has been invited to perform █░█
█░█ at the MontrΘal Jazz Festival, and will be █░█
█░█ re-joining their African Way Tour co-performers █░█
█░█ Zaki Ibrahim and DJ Nana, for a cross-Canada █░█
█░█ series of appearances including shows in Toronto, █░█
