This is the debut album as a leader by trombonist Dick Griffin,
released in 1974 on the Strata-East label. He is accompanied here by
a number of notable post-bop/free jazz luminaries including
saxophonist Sam Rivers, pianist Ron Burton, bassist Cecil McBee, and
drummer Freddie Waits, along with the lesser-known Warren Smith on
vibes and percussion, and Leopolodo Fleming who adds even more
percussion to the ensemble.

Throughout the record Griffin's huge, often aggressive tone is
impressive, though occasionally he seems to rely on his tone and
resorts to repetitive, simplistic (often pentatonic) melodies that
don't develop in any depth. Often though his simple and always
energetic playing seems to inspire the rhythm section, who thankfully
sound consistently great throughout the record. Rivers also adds a
nice level of depth to the music in his solos and accompaniment,
though the record might have been stronger had he been featured even
more. There are some ups and downs here, but overall it's a fun
example of 70's post-bop that flirts (heavily at times) with free
jazz.

"This album is dedicated in the memory of the late Mr.Charles Crosby
and many thanks to Rahsaan and Sun Ra. Although music is not visible,
I feel that because of itsartistic beauty, power and mystery, if
anything should be called 'The Eighth Wonder' of the world, music
should have that title. Through 'The Eighth Wonder' I hope to project
that feeling with the multiphonics I play. The multiphonic technique
on the trombone is being able to produce chords containing as many as
5 or 6 notes instead of the one note the instrument was designed to
produce. I would like to thank all musicians that helped to make this
album possible and thanks to you for listening." -- Musically yours,
Dick Griffin
