It could be safely stated that by 1985, most of the world was in the
clutches of Terminator fever, to the point where every other metal album
hitting the stands had some variation of Schwarzenegger's iconic
character gracing the cover. Whether it be the booming speed and thrash
metal bands that were taking over the market or the slew of remnant
traditional acts that were still towing some semblance of the NWOBHM
sound, the notion of a Sci-Fi post-apocalyptic work where humanity was
locked in a struggle for survival against its own technological progeny
had become ubiquitous. Even a Teutonic outfit that could be best
described as the missing link between the melodic fanfare of Scorpions
and the more metallic bite of Accept that saw a brief run on the famed
Mausoleum Records wave of old school acts was showcasing this trend
front and center, but unlike some of the more hard rock-leaning
adherents to the older style, Saints' Anger wasn't singing about
leather-clad babes and jovial outings at the pub, and their lone LP
Danger Metal had the musical credibility to match their grim exterior.
In essence, this album could be seen as a holdout from a recently
concluded era where things were much more stylized and uniform. The
pacing of things is largely geared towards the upper mid-tempo level
that most of Grim Reaper's 80s output rested upon, with occasional
flashes into faster territory more in line with what Judas Priest was
doing a couple years prior. Guitarist and vocalist Harald Piller himself
showcases a fairly close affinity with said band's iconic front man,
with his mid-ranged melodic material bearing an uncanny resemblance to
Halford minus the German accent, while his shrieking range has a tad bit
more of an AC/DC swagger in line with Udo Dirkschneider's material. The
musical content that backs him up definitely leans heavily on the
earlier 80s sound of Priest, sounding somewhere along the lines of
select offerings off of British Steel and Point Of Entry, but with a
guitar tone and gusto more befitting Balls To The Wall and enough hooks
on the chorus end of things to stand alongside Love At First Sting.
While the general ebb and flow of this album falls under the category of
mostly tried and true, this outfit makes up for any deficit in the
originality department with a forceful metallic execution that sees
several songs that could be treated as unsung classics. Starting on a
creeping, Sabbath-like riff before launching into a swift, shuffling
celebration, "The Ghost's Tale" is one of those songs that perfectly
embodies what the campier side of mid-80s metal was all about minus the
keyboards and plus a lot of Maiden-influenced dueling harmonies. More
conventional rockers like "The Bullet" and "Highway" (the latter being a
pretty blatant nod to the Judas Priest hit sharing a similar title) also
exhibit the same sort of dueling harmonized guitar assault that the
style adopted from Thin Lizzy, all the while also featuring a flashy
soloing style in line with the Tipton/Downing approach. But the goods
are not truly delivered in the metallic fury department until the
thundering anthem "Hero" hits the speakers, ushering in the closest
thing to a full on auditory assault Accept-style heard on here, complete
with a truly raw vocal display out of Piller.
Sadly not long after this album was unleashed, Saint's Anger would fold
tend and become yet another casualty of the ongoing ascendancy of thrash
metal. Nevertheless, musicians of this caliber could not have allowed
this to be the final word in what should have been a long and prolific
career, and thus the equally formidable Palace would be formed a while
later and feature three of the four that made up this formidable

solid chunk of old school fun that should not soon be forgotten. Any
self-respecting trustee of the current New Wave of Traditional Heavy
Metal will want to check this out to get an idea of how the style's
golden age differed with today's more insular set of influences.
Judgment Day may well have been averted in 1991 thanks to the efforts of
a reprogrammed model 101, but for those who want to enjoy one of the
growing number of alternate time lines set to music, give this unsung
