Returning to Suffused Music, GBrown provides an impressive
musical triptych through his Absolute EP.
Based in the famous musical city of New Orleans, Gary J. Brown
has found a home on Suffused Music with his GBrown production
moniker. First appearing on the label in April 2016 as an
undiscovered gem on the Initializing Vol. 9 series with This Is
Who We Are, the US artist then went on to include the track as
part of his debut Open EP some four months later. Proving
popular amongst his peers, his music has been remixed by some of
the finest underground house artists including Monojoke, Ewan
Rill and Bobby Deep.
Moreover, GBrown has also found his music signed to a clutch of
other impressive labels including Electronic Tree, Welcome Music
and Consapevole Recordings, with the latter accounting for The
Dreamer Is The Dream in October 2018. Now returning to Suffused
Music for the first time in two years, the title track is built
upon a seismic sub bass groove that moves elegantly around
percussive elements and ticking shakers. Building in
effervescent fashion, a rolling 16th note phrase adds urgency as
emotive chords are played out through layered pads and breathy
vocal phrasing. A wash of white noise fills the breakdown,
before the dominant bassline groove drops back into the mix with
ease to create a dark and sinister affair.
The twin part Counteracting Principles follows with Part 1
providing an energised offbeat hi-hat pattern and pulsating pad
that paves the way for a trademark rolling bassline to supply
urgency. Smooth pads and delay-soaked lead line meander across
the upper-frequencies in free-flowing patterns that creates a
heady sonic juxtaposition above the percussive groove. A chorus
of effects and dramatic layers further adds suspense and
intrigue.
Full of white-noise washes and intriguing synth line that
coruscates above heavy beat and metronomic percussion, Part 2
presents a glorious collage of sounds that provide fluid motion
and organic elements with a filmic quality. Intermittent synth
plucks make their mark post-breakdown to add structure and
club-friendly cadence to proceedings in a track that ably
illustrates GBrown's skill and production craftsmanship.
Three tracks full of intrigue and dynamism illustrate GBrown's
Absolute attention to detail and dedication to his work.
