Û catchy riffs, smooth sounds and just plain great Û
Û jazz.Much closer to Isham's jazz albums (it's even Û
Û on the Mercury label) than to his pastoral idiom Û
Û as heard in A River Runs Through It and Of Mice Û
Û and Men, Isham's score is a lot of fun.The opening Û
Û of the score is so catchy you'll be bouncing to Û
Û it, but there are other aspects of the score as Û
Û well. Mona's theme is dark and repetitive, with a Û
Û reggae and techno sound. There is another theme, a Û
Û sort of music-box motif, heard only in pieces Û
Û until the final track, ""Romeo is Dreaming,"" Û
Û which becomes a love theme, of sorts.The jaunty Û
Û portions of the score play on the happy, go-lucky Û
Û approach to life that the film's protagonist, Û
Û Jack, has... and the Mona theme is not so much a Û
Û theme for her, but rather for Jack's perception of Û
Û her.The music box motif, therefore, has deeper Û
Û implications as to the Jack's lack of morals, but Û
Û discovery of his soul... too late. It is used to Û
Û devastating effect at the end of the film, and the Û
Û music is so wrenchingly beautiful (and, as I said, Û
Û a culmination of sorts), that it has a similar Û
Û effect on a purely aural level.Furthermore, two Û
Û jazz source cues, by Abbey Lincoln and A.J. Croce, Û
Û appear on the album. They are quite welcome, as Û
Û not only are they well placed, but their presence Û
Û gives the music itself a sense of context.The Û
Û sound on this disc is smooth as silk and detailed Û
