This book uses ethnographic research to examine the role of dan
ce in the construction of identity in the distinctly British electro
nic dance music club culture of drum ΓÇÖnΓÇÖ bass. Dancing is revealed a
s the central way in which drum ΓÇÖnΓÇÖ bass clubbers construct and perf
orm their identities, which are informed, although not defined, by t
he club cultureΓÇÖs histories. The intertextual and intercultural deve
lopment of drum ΓÇÖnΓÇÖ bass musical and clubbing culture is shown to be
represented in the dancing body, prompting a challenge to the disco
urse of cultural appropriation. Popular representations of identitie
s are embodied by drum ΓÇÖnΓÇÖ bass clubbers through affective transmiss
ion via the popular screen, and in this process are re-valued in the
ir embodiment. Using a socially orientated understanding of intertex
tuality, the popular dancing body is shown to be heterocorporeal: co
ntaining traces of prior meaning and logic yet replete with new mean
ing and significance.
