░ Molesome is a solo project of the Swedish ░
░ musician Mattias Olsson. He is best known ░
░ as the drummer of Aenglagard for many ░
░ years, but he is or was also active in a ░
░ number of other bands (e.g. Kaukasus, ░
░ Necromonkey, The Opium Cartel). Towards ░
░ the end of 2015 the debut of his project ░
░ Molesome was released, so to speak Mattias ░
░ Olsson's first solo album. ░
░ ░
░ However, the recordings are not really ░
░ new, they were already made between 1998 ░
░ and 2001; after the final mastering they ░
░ disappeared in a closet and fell into ░
░ oblivion, only to reappear a good 15 years ░
░ later. It's a pity that we listeners had ░
░ to wait so long for Songs for Vowels and ░
░ Mammals, because the album contains ░
░ wonderful musical gems. ░
░ ░
░ Mattias Olsson plays quite a number of ░
░ instruments. First of all there are all ░
░ kinds of analog keyboard instruments, ░
░ besides the Mellotron and various analog ░
░ synthesizers also such curious things as ░
░ the Optigan and its improved successor ░
░ Orchestron, also various kinds of guitars, ░
░ bass and some percussion. His actual ░
░ instrument, the drums, is not used at all, ░
░ being replaced by rhythm machine instead. ░
░ The music is practically completely ░
░ instrumental, only occasionally voice ░
░ samples are used. ░
░ ░
░ From this list one can already conclude ░
░ that the music moves in electronic realms. ░
░ Songs for Vowels and Mammals is a ░
░ collection of wonderful electronic sound ░
░ miniatures, which on the one hand tumble ░
░ melodiously and playfully out of the ░
░ boxes, but on the other hand are full of ░
░ strange breaks and barbs. The melodies, ░
░ mostly performed by synths or organ, ░
░ sometimes seem a bit melancholic despite ░
░ all the playful exuberance, like the ░
░ wistful memories of an adult of the ░
░ carefree games of childhood (Grain of ░
░ Children, Before Belvedere Street). ░
░ ░
░ Then again, they are interspersed with ░
░ oddly quirky interjections that come ░
░ across as less unwieldy than whimsical. Or ░
░ they indulge in blissful beauty like the ░
░ mellotron-soaked pieces Slow Seek Wha, ░
░ Naples or - especially beautiful - Snow in ░
░ the Suburbs. In addition, all kinds of ░
░ rhythm generators of acoustic or ░
░ electronic kind rattle, throb, clang, ░
░ plink and plonk, the latter often with the ░
░ typical "cheap" sound of the rhythm ░
░ machines from the 70s. ░
░ ░
░ Also otherwise there are again and again ░
░ reminiscences of blessed times of ░
░ electronic Krautrock, especially of the ░
░ music of the Weserbergland school. Thus ░
░ the guitar-dominated Second Half reminds ░
░ somewhat of the music of Michael Rother, ░
░ and also the works of Cluster from the ░
░ second half of the 70s - that is, from ░
░ Zuckerzeit onwards - keep coming to mind. ░
░ Also the use of the rhythm machine with ░
░ the typical "cheap" sound contributes to ░
░ this impression. Nevertheless, the music ░
░ of Matthias Olsson or Molesome sounds ░
░ quite independent and also by no means ░
░ only "retro". At the latest with the ░
░ gloomy, mechanical sounding In Harms Way ░
░ it becomes clear that Mattias Olsson's ░
░ music is not exclusively rooted in the ░
░ past. ░

░ With Songs for Vowels and Mammals, Mattias ░
░ Olsson has succeeded in creating a ░
░ wonderful album of electronic sound ░
░ miniatures that, despite some ░
░ reminiscences of the music of the ░
░ Wesebergland School, sounds independent ░
░ and contemporary. Beautiful! The last ░
░ piece, by the way, is actually just under ░
░ 5 minutes long, then after a longer break, ░
░ the introductory intro Glock is recorded ░
