Originally released in 1982 as LP on Papier-Mache Records

According to the liner notes, Deux Filles are Gemini Forque &
     Claudine Coule. Not really!!!
Deux Filles are Colin Lloyd Tucker and Simon Fisher Turner. SFT
says, "In 82, Colin and I left (The The) and formed our own
label, 'Papier Mache.' We made 2 LP's disguised as two French
     girls--'Deux Filles.' They sold OK thru Rough Trade . . . "
The sound of the band resembles much of SFT's early work for
Derek Jarman (who is credited in the liner notes). Strange,
haunting, obscure, sometime experimental, sometimes folky
     creations.

"Originally released 10 years ago, this anniversary edition is
its first CD issue. Featuring musical contributions from Matt
Johnson (The The), Annie Hogan & Steve Shirlock (Marc Almond's
Mambas) this album is as, if not more compelling 10 years on
that its 1982 release. This haunting album combines strength
with extreme fragility in its mix of haunting guitars against a
backdrop of flowing classical tradition. With the present
social and economic climate similar to that of 10 years ago the
music captures the mood of the 1990s. it evokes feelings of
optimism rising out of an our-riding sense of depression in its
somewhat sombre classical structure. Deux Filles, or Gemini and
Claudine have not been sighted or even collected royalties
since 1985 when they mysteriously severed contact with friends
and managers, an expedition to their private retreat failed to
yield their whereabouts and they have not reappeared."

Trivia: "The idea of presenting it as the work of two women was
Simon's. I think it was a good idea, it definitely affected the
     way people heard the album."

     REVIEWS

"Steer clear of Humbug's press releases and sleeve notes, which
tell of Deux Filles' disappearance in the years after this 1982
album, and head straight for the music. Try very hard not to
use the dread words 'Vini Reilly meets the Cocteau Twins'. It
does sound a lot like what Brian Eno might do if he recorded on
4AD Records, but despite a lot of minor-key, echoing morbidity,
it's a delicate, original album. Her Masters Voice is a
wonderful blend of found chant with rhythmic ambience, and the
ethnic instruments on She Slides are equally fascinating. In
places it's very pastoral and conventional, in others quite
experimental in its use of sound. A more melodic Orchestra
Arcana might be a point of reference, if anyone remembers them.
Overall, it mixes it's styles with consummate ease, and merits
     a wider hearing."

"Silence and Wisdom was one of the later albums composed and
performed by Gemini Forque and Claudine Caule in the early
1980's. The album was recorded in Soho (England) and Le Harve
(France) in the Spring of 1982 and bearing this fact in mind
the album portrays an extremely imaginative and evocative use
of samples, mainly those of "odd" vocals and speech which we
sometimes incorporated as an integral part of the song
structure itself and not merely as ornamentation (e.g. Her
Masters Voice and Fleurs doll). Apart from being innovative
they were also ahead of their time, although tending to write
with classical instruments on the whole (acoustic guitar and
piano) they incorporated some lovely synthesiser textures
mainly via Moogs. The music tends to build up around simple
structures, evolving into sometimes quite complex pieces which
could possibly be described as "ambient background music"
although I don't think that would do justice enough to music
which is on a similar wavelength to Brian Eno, Japan and David
Syllvian. I'm convinced that some of the work on this album
was a direct source of inspiration for the albums "Gone to
Earth" and "Secrets of the Beehive". "Silence and Wisdom"
contains fifteen tracks, conjuring some lovely atmospherics
with a slightly sinister and dark undertone. If you're into any
of the afore mentioned artists you'll love this."

"All records are now trumped by Deux Filles' "Silence And
Wisdom." Not a very well-known artifact, but someone did see
fit to reissue it on CD in recent times. This 1982 relic is a
stunningly beautiful and inventive record as well as quiet
subterfuge. Hums and drones give way to loops broken by melodic
guitar inventions framed by sound effects and voices. Something
of a thinking womyn's Cocteau Twins with loads of surprises and
musical footnotes. The Deux Filles in question were Gemini
Forque and Claudine Coule (who appear on the cover), and there
is a wonderful story of how they came together and formed a
feminine bond out of adversity. In reality, this duo turns out
to be two perfectly well-adjusted men in drag; none other than
Simon Fisher Turner (Derek Jarman soundtracker) and Collin
Lloyd Tucker (of The Gadgets/Jeremy's Secret infamy). The
marvel of this record (and they've recorded at least one other,
equally ingenious) is that I had to be convinced that this was
not the product of two expatriate French filles. Someone
slipped some vagina into these boys' viagra because this record
     is dripping with estrogen."
