█ Tortoise's John McEntire is known for a lot of █
█ things, and being a slack-ass biznitch isn't one of █
█ 'em. He's Chicago's infamous post-rock scenester, █
█ hanging around with other cool Thrill Jockey/ Drag █
█ City/ Hefty- label types like Bundy K. Brown, █
█ producer Casey Rice, and John Hughes III. (Yes, John █
█ Hughes III is the son of John Hughes, who directed █
█ all your favorite '80s brat pack films. And "Home █
█ Alone 3.") He's a remixin' maniac who's worked the █
█ 'tables for hotshots like Coldcut, Blur and █
█ Stereolab. He's an esteemed engineer/ producer who's █
█ recorded albums for the Spinanes, Gastr Del Sol, █
█ David Grubbs, Snowpony, Eleventh Dream Day, Trans Am, █
█ Ui, the Sea and Cake, and Red Krayola (to name only a █
█ few). Needless to say, the guy's busy as a hog on █
█ fire and he shows no sign of letting up. █
█ McEntire's latest project was scoring "Reach the █
█ Rock," a film written by John Hughes (not John Hughes █
█ III-- John Hughes the filmmaker). Not surprisingly, █
█ the soundtrack came out sounding wonderful. It's a █
█ decidedly laid- back affair which is comprised of █
█ seven McEntire originals, a new Tortoise track, a new █
█ Bundy K. Brown track, an excellent new offering from █
█ the Sea and Cake, an awesome new (albeit very short) █
█ piano- based instrumental track from Polvo, and a new █
█ track from Chicago experimentalists Dianogah. The █
█ music on the soundtrack is your standard post-rock █
█ fare-- the same kind of instrumental magic that makes █
█ Tortoise so damn wonderful.All told, Reach the Rock █
█ is a beautiful and relaxing effort, and perfect █
█ background music for your next subdued soiree. I've █
█ always said that post-rock is the indie hipster's █
█ version of new age music, and I think this record'll █
█ back me up on that statement; it'll calm you down █
█ after a hard day at the girlfriend's, or (as your █
█ friends in PM Dawn might say) set you adrift on █
█ memory bliss. And if you need something to tide you █
█ over until Tortoise's next release, this record cries █
█ your name. Tasty! █
