Maddslinky is the alter ego of David Jones (aka Zed Bias), globally
recognised as one of the best producers to have emerged from the UK
garage/two-step scene. From seminal releases on the UK garage scene to
the chart success of 2000's æNeighberhoodÆ (and remix duties for
everybody from Pharoahe Monche to DJ Zinc and Whitney Houston) his
sound is an incendiary mix of monstrous basslines, hefty yet complex
beats and a soulful twist.
Despondent about the musical state of UK garage (all Versace and
æwhite powder dreamsÆ) Dave decided to kick the Crystal drinkers to
the curb and up the ante; pushing the musical boundaries of the genre
under his new moniker û Maddslinky.
And weÆre not talking self-indulgence here û this is about getting to
the roots of the music, the heart of the clubbing matter. Real soulful
flavours mixed with jazz, reggae, Latin and a little techno in the
mix. With two well received singles behind him (æDark Swing/Future
ChicanoÆ and æReject/Desert FogÆ) and a string of remixes (most
notably the anthemic æFeed the CatÆ for Kaidi Tatham) the vibe is
building; from Gilles Peterson to the Dreem Team, and the breaks
fraternity to the tech house set, the message is clear: Maddslinky
means it.
æMake Your PeaceÆ sees Maddslinky put his message to music. From the
menacing two-step funk of æRejectÆ (a Peterson fave), the jazzy
atmospherics of æDesert FogÆ (featuring MilanÆs DJ Rocca) or the West
London meets two-step stormer æMake Your PeaceÆ (featuring Kaidi
Tatham and Kevin Robinson) this is music that owes much to the past,
but is navigating unchartered waters. Super soulful vocal cuts æThe
StoryÆ (featuring Shereen Wilson) and æFeel The HarmoniesÆ plus the
sound system style of æDoing My ThingÆ (featuring Juiceman and Simba)
exhibit a desire to not let this party get too serious.
This is music that defies genres and has grown out of a desire to
ôpush things forwardö; don't ignore the call, ômake your peaceö. ôThe
smart money says this album will prove a landmark, donÆt let it pass
