pianist moulin learnt his trade in the vibrant european jazz scene
of the early 60's.france,in particular,was home to many important
american musicians who had stayed on in the 50's after touring or
military service.musicians such as johnny griffin,nathan davis and
carmell jones and homegrown record labels like savoy and saba/mps
helped mantain a healthy jazz underground in europe.
moulin formed his own trio in 1961,winning prizes at various jazz
festivals before joinig the alex scorier quintet in 1963.it was
during these engagements and whilst recording with the philip
catherine quartet that moulin would find some of the core members
for placebo.
founded in 1971,placebo consisted of marc moulin(keys),nic
fissette and richard rousselet(tp),alex scorier and johnny
dover(saxes),nicolas kletchwowsky(bass) and freddy
rottier(drums).in the same year they recorded their first album
"ball of eyes" for cbs belgium and walked away with a prize from
the 1972 montreux jazz festival.
by the time of the second placebo album "1973" the composition
became more abstract and experimental.
the minimoog would increasingly become the focus for placebo
tracks on the third album "placebo".marc moulin's use of
synthesised basslines was pioneering and leads us to another
important link between moulin and today's dance music scene.it's
quite possible marc moulin's influence on today's music scene is
far greater than his relative lack of international profile could
ever suggest.
