I didnÆt expect Sacrificial Blood and Unholy Fucking Hatred to be quite
as fun as they are, but I guess thatÆs what you get when you judge an
album by its cover. A muscled Satan holding a soon-to-be-killed poser (I
suppose) over the awkward wreckage of a smashed up car doesnÆt tell me
that IÆll be enjoying hi-octane death thrash with furiously entertaining
riffing, thatÆs for sure. Anyway, a few other odd things stand to be
mentioned about Sacrificial Blood, such as singing drummer Mike Keller
and their cover of RainbowÆs æKill the KingÆ, which ends this debut
album in a much less serious way than it began.
I imagine that calling these New Jersey boys death thrash has put all
sorts of notions into your head, but let me expunge them briefly. This
is what Usurper would sound like if all their songs were the fast
sections from Necronemesis. A gritty, compressed guitar sound makes sure
youÆll hear the riffs before everything else, though it doesnÆt make
them very deathly, actually accentuating the speed in a way that makes
me think of what would happen if Evil Invaders or Ranger played a gig
using SlayerÆs classic equipment. Yes, it would be nuts, though I assume
you see what IÆm getting at when I say Unholy Fucking Hatred seems fun
in an unexpected manner. When youÆre singing songs like æReign of HateÆ
and æCrushing the FalseÆ, using an insistent marching riff might seem
trve to those doing it, yet it still brings that ironic heavy metal
smile to my face. You know the one: like how you giggle a bit when Tom
G. Warrior performs one of his death grunts.
Actually, some songs enter the fray with a more serious deathly vibe,
æEvil ForceÆ particularly matching the belched roars for heaviness,
though even there Keller is just as likely to pull out a lower-pitched
version of Battle BeastÆs caterwauling ôbird vocalö. What starts to
become obvious, after youÆve got used to having fun along to Unholy
Fucking Hatred, is that most of the songs aim for a very similar target.
By the nature of the bandÆs identity, we were never going to get any
ballads or slower songs, so the onrush of riffing madness simply
continues until the end, when æKill the KingÆ gets dragged through one
of its most frantic versions. You see what IÆm saying: Sacrificial Blood
knew what they liked, and stuck to that. Yes, guitar solos arrive pretty
much on time, though we still only get the noisy, chaotic type and a
slightly more controlled shredding, which doesnÆt change the feel of the
songs much.
Of course, let none of that take away from a very decent debut album,
since this type of thrash (in the end, thatÆs more or less Sacrificial
BloodÆs niche) prides itself on delivering straight albums of fast,
heavy songs as seriously as it can, so lacking variety seems almost a
plus in that context. Personally, I could have done with a couple more
hooks to hold onto, although IÆm not complaining about the instrumental
tones nor the amount of riffs laid down using them, which also scores
highly in this genre. Sacrificial Blood may appeal slightly to fans of
dirty heavy metal, black speed mayhem, or purer death metal, though
their hearts say thrash - and thrash they do.
