Would you feel cheated if I told you there's something missing from
this album? Well, rest assured, it's small... in fact, it's no larger
than the word "up". It's the first "up' in the album title, that
somehow got misplaced when transferred from the title of the first
track.

You can also rest assured that nothing else is omitted from this
collection of straight-ahead no-nonsense combo swing. Gene Russell
has been promulgating that type of chamber jazz since 1960, and he
has been blessed with the services of bassist George Morrow and
drummer Clarence Johnston long enough now so that the rapport is
genuine and basic - not something ad libbed, like a jazz chorus.

Sure, spontaneity is the hallmark - the prime mover in jazz - but in
order to convey a sense of mutual purpose and enjoyment, a combo
should be, ideally, a permanent thing.

Such mutuality, enjoyment and permanence are embodied in the Gene
Russell Trio. What Gene, George and Clarence have come up with for
their Decca debut is as comfortable as an old shoe - and just as
"sole-ful":

Up-Up And Away: All "Ups' present and accounted for. Gene adds a new
dimension to this Jim Webb classic, putting his percussive keyboard
approach over an infectious Latin-style foundation laid down by
George Clarence.

1-2-3: With the accent still Latin, Gene shows how funk can be added
to a jazz samba. Under his octaves and chordal jabs, Clarence keeps
up a tambourine-sparkled rhythmic monologue while George winds his
way between the two like a broken field runner.

When Fall In Love: Usually heard as a maudlin, lachrymose ballad,
this old chestnut has new life injected into it as the trio sets the
metronome at Gene's favorite marking: "medium groove." Considering
the number of tags at the end, the threesome must have been reluctant
to let this one go.

Yours Is My Heart Alone: Leave it to Gene to find something soulful
in Franz Lehar. This old operetta masterpiece is an excellent example
of trio rapport. No intro - instant groove. And when the first jazz
chorus begins, listen to the range of colorings. Gene stays way up in
the treble and deals a smooth tremolo; George is walking way down in
the resonant guts of his bass fiddle; and Clarence calmly rides
cymbal - straight four to the bar, without frills. And how about the
double-stops that George slides down for at the ending? Sounds life
he's descending two musical banisters!

Groovy Soul: The title tells all. Semantics may get in the way at
times. Call it "groove", "soul", "funk". Technically, this track is a
traditional 12-bar blues. But I prefer Gene's label: "Groovy Soul".

Love Is Here To Stay: The tendency with so many groups is to play as
fast as humanly possible. Fortunately, Gene is not impressed by speed
for speed's sake. This track is another fine example of his taste for
medium swingers. It's also a fine example of George's low-down,
earthy sound that reverberates with a rare richness in these days of
electric basses.

Too Close For Comfort: A little bit of call-and-response flavors the
opening chorus, leading to Gene's full chordal statement - then it's
hard-driving jazz all the way. A fine swinger, punctuated by some
fancy bass drum footwork from Clarence.

Born Free: Another original concept by Gene, in contrast to the
forced heroics usually associated with this tune. You can beat one of
two ways on this one: a slow four, if you side with Gene or George; a
feeling of superimposed three, if you dig Clarence.

Broadway: This is a favorite among jazzmen - especially singers -
because of its basically happy lilt. Gene and company preserve that
freshness with a straightforward reading.

The more you hear the album, the less concerned you'll be with the
mysterious up-manship. Perhaps there's no relation between the atbum
title and the song title. It's probably the course that Decca has
"charted" for Gene Russell: UP ANO AWAY!
