Until quite recently David Axelrod was a rather unknown
entity. Unless you were some crate digging hip-hop addict or
part of the extremely clued up Mo' Wax posse, it's likely
that his name meant little or nothing to you. But the last
couple of years has seen a string of his amazing late
sixties and early seventies works re-released - and someone
who had been discarded to the scrap heap of lost geniuses
was re-discovered.
This album has likewise been gathering dust for nearly
thirty years, never once seeing the light of day due to
record company differences. But with momentum behind the
re-issues and at the insistence of DJ Shadow and James
Lavelle, Axelrod entered the studio once again to trawl over
this lost masterpiece. With the help of the aforementioned
duo, two new tracks emerged and the seven old ones were
sprinkled with strings and texture. What they have come up
with is an incredibly lush record, which sounds both
elegantly old and yet as relative and inventive as anything
else that is being released today.
With its menacing horn section, dark strings that lurk over
you and the growling scary rap from Ras Kass, "The Little
Children" is a harsh, but perfect introduction to the beauty
that lies within. Then "Jimmy T" rolls us into the plateau
of restrained grace with its rhythmic drumming, snaking
guitars and foggy days saxophone. "Crystal Ball" skips along
on a tightrope of strings and a hovering Hammond organ.
"Fantasy For Ralph" sounds like something from Bernard
Hermann's score to "Taxi Driver" while "The Dr & The
Diamond" creeps around and then suddenly grabs you when
least expected. "Big B Plus" lashes from side to side like a
boat lost at sea and "For Land's Sake" then slows everything
down with its soulful early morning calmness. "The Shadow
Knows" is as cinematic as anything that the great John Barry
has produced. "Loved Boy" shuts the record down with Lou
Rawls mournfully singing over one of the most punctuated
arrangements ever, all the notes played as if in perfect
symmetry with each note sung.
This is the album that the majority of artists will have to
look up to this year. (www.wow.ie)
