Seems like guys from Tiran, a band basing in the Russian north-west,
couldÆve easily taken up complicated creative professions, such as
scientific research, architecture, pharmaceutics, electronics
engineering etc., as they, apparently, do have the ôknowledge of musicö.
TheyÆve managed to capture, to decode the beauty of an exemplary music
style, and then render that beauty into their own songs, adding new apt
elements.
What style am I talking about? While listening to this demo, I have an
almost wrenching ôKillÆem Allö feeling. To this day, not a single new
band could arouse this in me. No, I donÆt mean the music is like on KEA.
Of course, some riffs here are similar to those of early Metallica, and
the overall level of heaviness is rather close to them, and the
rehearsal sound strongly reminds of old times, BUT! The main thing that
unites this and early Metallica albums is the approach to writing û
ômusic uber allesö!
This conscientious approach means that while not all of the riffs are
super-memorable and headbangable, none of them are random or filler, and
they are compatible and combined in an inventive manner, so that the
song structures are not obvious or repetitive. With this demo, this
approach has also developed into vocal parts being not the central
thing. Most of the time, there are no vocals. When there are some,
theyÆre not too high in the mix. The vocalist, in spite of showing no
physical strength in his voice, screams and squeals in rather a
memorable dynamic hysterical manner.
Other things that probably help to arouse a ôKillÆem Allö feeling are
the sufficient clarity of the production (in spite of this demo being
just a rehearsal), and the overall mood which, for some reason, seems
cheerful and warm rather than cold and mean (the latter would be with
any Slayer record).
The riff techniques and drum parts here are mostly that of speed & heavy
metal. The first track, Genocide, is, however, mostly death metal with
some distinct homage to Chuck Schuldiner. Also, the band ôswitchesö to
cheesy traditional heavy a couple of times.
What differs TiranÆs music from the music of speed metal monsters is the
emphasized classicality. The songs have many, sometimes too many, riffs
and logical episodes, as if they are mini-symphonies. This makes them a
bit chaotic, which isnÆt necessarily a shortcoming. ItÆs like the
composer had ômany things to sayö, haha!
All in all, the members of this band prove that they belong to a
talented nation. If their music lacks something, it is probably the
engagement with their own rich national musical traditions, which could
make the material even more powerful.
