∙[ I don't know about you, but I always had a healthy, if passing, ]∙
∙[ interest in Latin music until Ry Cooder did the Buena Vista ]∙
∙[ thing. Now you can't get away from those langorous rhythms. It's ]∙
∙[ on the radio, played in coffee bars and every school hall or ]∙
∙[ community centre inside the M25 is given over to clumsy anglos ]∙
∙[ strutting their stuttering stuff at least one night a week. It's ]∙
∙[ infectious, for sure, but more in the sense of pestilence than ]∙
∙[ anything else. ]∙

∙[ That whole authentic Latin thing leaves me cold. I've been ]∙
∙[ happily spoilt over the last decade or so by stirring beats and ]∙
∙[ strong production values so, as much as the melodies and ]∙
∙[ percussion of the classic songs impress, they leave me cold, ]∙
∙[ unfulfilled and slightly annoyed. Mainstream media taste ]∙
∙[ dictates that, unless you know what you're looking for (and, of ]∙
∙[ course, where to find it) nothing is going to revive a warmth to ]∙
∙[ the Latin genre (if such a thing exists). Then I found this ]∙
∙[ album. ]∙
∙[ ]∙
∙[ Ad Lib is a very tasty collection of, mostly instrumental, ]∙
∙[ latin-infused jazz. But latin-jazz that satisfies a desire for ]∙
∙[ more substance, greater brute force. The percussive elements are ]∙
∙[ meaty and much of the rhythm section recalls old Santana at his ]∙
∙[ raunchiest. That is not to say that the album does not have its ]∙
∙[ mellower moments in abundance. Tastefully employed samples and ]∙
∙[ loops ensure, though, that this album has a very modern feel, ]∙
∙[ with an inventive nod to the traditional. ]∙
