The second album of improvised noise from Canadian bassist Tim
Olive and Japanese guitarist Nisikawa Buhnsho. The first was
credited to their given names, but Buhnsho felt the need for a
moniker this time. Olive, who's lived in Osaka for 15 years,
chose Supernatural Hot Rug And Not Used after seeing the
phrase on a Japanese T-shirt.
The odd name fits well, as its nonsensical semantics and
awkward cadence match the duo's bumpy, irregular sound. Using
homemade tools to coax noises from repurposed instruments, they
produce a thoughtful racket full of scrapes, clangs, blips and
cartoonish boings. That last element is key, as without the
wry humour, the albums reductionist style could sound dry.
Instead, Olive and Buhnsho's cacophony often suggests Raymond
Scott as an improvisor.
The album's tone is set by the opening Tsutenkaku, a
collection of small abrasions that builds mountains out of
mole-sized events. Spa World uses twangy bursts as punchlines,
while The Neon Cross constructs rhythm from the toneless click
of a skipping turntable. Olive and Buhnsho's only misstep is
the 11 minute Blue Tent, whose overused sounds veer into
monotony. But that slight valley is fully redeemed by the peak
of The New World, a miniature symphony of crunches and
squeaks. It reveals the duo's level of interaction, suggesting
more permutations of their intriguing sounds are still to
come.
