::: Square Enix released a double album of the game's soundtrack :::
::: on April 21, 2010, called NieR Gestalt & Replicant Original :::
::: Soundtrack. The 2 hour and 30 minute long double album has :::
::: the catalog number SQEX-10189/90. :::

::: The soundtrack is mainly composed of melancholic acoustic :::
::: pieces that are strongly accompanied by the beautiful voice :::
::: of Emi Evans. Of the 43 songs on the double album, only 9 :::
::: are unaccompanied by vocals; the 4 versions of :::
::: "Dispossession" and "Yonah," as well as "Dance of the :::
::: Evanescent." With the exception of "Ashes of Dream," the :::
::: lyrics are not intended to mean anything; for the song, :::
::: Evans was given a list of Japanese words to use, which she :::
::: then translated into English, French and Scottish Gaelic. :::
::: The song and its variants were the last to be recorded, and :::
::: Evans convinced the songwriters that a song on the album :::
::: should have recognizable lyrics rather than futuristic :::
::: English as they had originally planned. Evans found the song :::
::: "Ashes" the most difficult song to write on the soundtrack, :::
::: as he had difficulty writing lyrics that met the :::
::: songwriters' criteria of despair and hopelessness. :::

::: "Hills of Radiant Wind" is one of the few uplifting songs on :::
::: the melancholy album, for this piece Evans sang in :::
::: Portuguese form in a style that sounded as if a spirit was :::
::: floating in the wind. For the song "Grandma" she sang in :::
::: French style, trying to "put in as much angst and :::
::: melancholy" as possible; she created the song in a single :::
::: recording and it is "one of the most memorable songs" she :::
::: has ever sung. "The Wretched Automatons" is sung in an :::
::: English variant and was recorded before adding mechanical :::
::: sounds heard throughout the track, while "KainΘ" is a Gaelic :::
::: version. :::

::: The album reached #24 on the Oricon Japan music chart, and :::
::: remained on the chart for 11 weeks. It was well received by :::
::: critics; Patrick Gann of RPGFan called the album "an :::
::: incredibly good soundtrack" and named it a contender for :::
::: video game soundtrack of the year, as well as "one of the :::
::: best video game soundtracks of all time." He applauded that :::
::: the music was both "meticulously crafted" and "accessible to :::
::: an untrained ear." Don Kotowski of Square Enix Music Online :::
::: praised the "captivating vocal work" and "exquisite" :::
::: composition. He also mentioned that each song retains a :::
::: sense of individuality, even when reusing tracks from other :::
::: tracks. He was less gratified towards the mini-albums, which :::
::: he considered to be good introductions to the game's tracks, :::
::: but not worth buying separately. Jason Napolitano of :::
::: Original Sound Version praised the album as well, saying it :::

::: Nier's soundtracks were composed by a collaboration of the :::
::: Monaca studio, led by Keiichi Okabe. The other composers :::
::: include Kakeru Ishihama, Keigo Hoashi, and Takafumi :::

::: composer and director of the project. Okabe was brought into :::
::: the project when the game concept was created and worked :::
::: intermittently on the soundtrack for the next 3 years until :::
::: its release. The music for the game was entirely composed :::
::: outside of the game's development. The music was designed :::
