Eastern Pennsylvania death metal underground trustees and guardians of
an all but lost art form Orcus were definitely a curiosity, and this
writer doesn't simply say that because he was afforded the opportunity
to open up a show for them a few months before getting his high school
diploma. There is something truly admirable and a bit awe-striking about
a band so committed to an older approach to metal that in the recent
aftermath of death metal pioneer Chuck Schuldiner's passing, the split
of Obituary and constant shifting of allegiances among the smaller
remnant of death metal bands left in the U.S., to speak nothing for the
almost non-existing thrash scene of the day apart from lackluster output
courtesy of Megadeth and Slayer, they were still soldiering forward,
unbent and unbowed. Even when faced with a number of lineup changes and
now being rendered a 3-piece, Orcus was a band with an uncanny knack for
turning rotten lemons into corpse-satisfying lemonade.
To the majority of folks who may not know this band as they're primary
claim to fame of late is opening for Overkill several years back, the
name of the game here is an upper-mid paced brand of death metal that
has a strong thrash remnant to its riffing approach that would inspire
the likes of Slayer or Possessed to say "Hey, you're kinda falling back
on some older ideas there." Coming a few years after a heavily Overkill
and Metallica-influenced EP with harsher vocals in Here Comes The End,
this independently conceived demo that is really along similar lines to
a professional EP The Forgotten Prayer is essentially a more amped up
sequel to the same winning formula. It's all but impossible to miss the
blatant nods to Metallica's ...And Justice For All and Overkill's The
Years Of Decay when hearing these songs, parting way for some occasional
moments of melodic meandering that is somewhat reminiscent of Death's
Symbolic.
For those select few that have followed this band's career to some
extent and have heard the early 1998 EP, the primary way that this
builds upon it is by further elaboration of the riffs. Now going it
solo, guitarist Greg Allison has added a bit more of a gallop-happy
sense of agitation to his rhythm work that is somewhat indicative of an
Iced Earth influence, particularly on the harrowing journey through
spiritual fatalism of a title song "The Forgotten Prayer", which also
sees the same guitarist channeling the wild solo style of Randy Shawver
for a bit, unleashing a mad solo that could have been lifted directly
off Night Of The Stormrider. For his part, bassist Rich Books plays his
role to a minimum after the fashion of Tom Araya, but his lead vocal
work has gotten a tad more raunchy, occasionally even showing some
tendencies towards some of the Swedish vocalists the ruled the roost in
the early 90s, though there is still a latent Hetfield tinge to his
voice, particularly during some gang shouts thrown in at key points.
The final verdict on this album is an unsung classic that was released
about 10 years too late to have made any sort of impact beyond the small
cluster of local Pennsylvania bumpkins that caught them back in the day.
Every song found on here is a solid slab of crunchy riffing goodness
that is sure to sit well with fans of latter 90s death, Obituary, as
well as any early 90s thrash and power/thrash fans who want something
with a bit more of a melodic tone to the instrumental elements. Whether
it's more agitated madness like the Metallica infused cruiser
"Bloodlust" or the slightly more morbid yet still crushing closer
"Orcus", this is an EP that delivers a vintage metallic fist to the
mouth that will leave the listener toothless yet still begging for
seconds in a lisping tone. Call it a forgotten throwback or the classic
death thrasher that could have been, but it should remain forgotten no
longer.
