Last year a six track cassette EP from Connoisseur,
Stoner Justice, blew my mind. Well, now it is time to
move from the bowl to the gravity bong. Stoner
Justice is now a fourteen track, proper full length.
Still on Tankcrimes, Connoiseur have unleashed their
plant fueled mayhem. Oakland is the birthplace of
this dirty, crusty, heavy sludge-infused hardcore.
Connoisseur create an alchemy of d-beat and metal and
power-violence. You can hear all of these factors
collide together and decimate eardrums.
Connoisseur employs a large d-beat rumbling of
cavalry on one song; then, moves to breakdowns and
harsh, tidal doom on the next. Fittingly, for slow
romper, ôFull On Marijuana Addictö, molasses soaked
riffs plod along a grueling scream for four minutes.
However, the band has two twenty second tracks back
to back. The time changes in each song follow the
blueprint of hardcore, harnessing the energy of bands
like Infest or Coke Bust. BUt then the Grief nod
shines on ô(Destroy the) Smoke Machinesö. This also
serves as a nod to Earth Crisis, a band that despite
some glaring differences, Connoiseur count as an
obvious influence. It works too, as it is a cry to
abandon the marijuana industry becoming a privitized
and/or federal commodity. Hey Rambo said it best û
ôPeace to straight edge and the home brewers. DIYö.
And if Earth Crisis can hang with Madball, we should
realize that we ainÆt so different.
I wanted to do this review for the full length, as
last year I did the interview for the Stoner Justice
EP. The truth is that these dudes embody all the
aspects I love about underground music. This is
perfection. The music is heavy, ugly, abhorrent,
disdainful sludge. They boast huge riffs and the
production is accurate; never polished or smooth or
crisp. They melt doom riffs into hardcore breakdowns
and before they get too slow, they spazz into fast
bursts of grind/d-beat/powerviolence. No genre
moniker fits Connoisseurerfectly and that works well.
This shit is nasty. So pack a bowl û or donÆt. I like
it at home ith some haze just as much as at work
sober as a judge. (Hutch)
