██│ London GrammarÆs third album æCalifornian SoilÆ marks several shifts
██│ for the group. Sonically, itÆs the most upbeat theyÆve ever sounded,
██│ but itÆs behind the scenes that the major change occurred, with
██│ vocalist Hannah Reid stepping up into a leadership position.
██│
██│ Behind the scenes, though, things werenÆt so picture-perfect.
██│ Throughout their time as a band, Reid had been enduring countless
██│ instances of music industry misogyny. There were the engineers who
██│ didnÆt take her seriously, outfits she was pushed to wear, men she
██│ couldnÆt show emotion around (lest she be considered ôirrationalö) and
██│ unsolicited comments about her appearance.
██│
██│ She was exhausted by the sexist microaggressions sheÆd had to put up
██│ with on a daily basis, and something had to give. As she told NME in a
██│ cover story earlier this year: ôI did say to Dan and Dot, æI donÆt want
██│ this to end, but something does have to change because I just canÆt
██│ keep doing my best work or going out on the road if IÆm going to come
██│ back and feel this way.Æö
██│
██│ And so, as Reid stepped up into that leadership position, assuming
██│ responsibility for the bandÆs visual aesthetic, she also opened herself
██│ up more in her songwriting. While on previous release, 2017Æs æTruth Is
██│ A Beautiful ThingÆ, Reid retreated behind the recordÆs gloomy
██│ instrumentals (ôI wasnÆt making myself very vulnerable and I didnÆt
██│ feel like I was taking any risks,ö she told NME), on æCalifornian SoilÆ
██│ her lyricism is honest and direct.
██│
██│ The album sees Reid tackle toxic relationships (æLord ItÆs A FeelingÆ),
██│ break-ups (æHow Does It FeelÆ) and the death of the American dream
██│ (æAmericaÆ), fusing her searing honesty with romantic imagery.
██│
██│ Jubilant æBaby ItÆs YouÆ, a festival-ready banger that depicts the
██│ euphoria of being in love, sees Reid sing: ôAll these colours in me /
██│ But all I see is you / Nothing else mattersö. Later, she succinctly
██│ states, ôYou, baby itÆs youö, ReidÆs own feelings laid bare over the
██│ songÆs soaring instrumentals. Trip-hop moment æI Need The NightÆ,
██│ meanwhile, tackles head on ReidÆs experience of the music industry.
██│ ôTake all your limbs and wrap them round your neck / So they all laugh
██│ at your predicamentö she croons, depicting the countless instances of
██│ misogyny sheÆs experienced over her career, and how she then
██│ internalised these experiences.
██│
██│ This bold lyricism is coupled with lush and lively musical
██│ accompaniments. On æCalifornian SoilÆ, London Grammar have managed to
██│ distil the ecstasy that permeates the house-laced ending of the bandÆs
██│ 2013 single æMetal & DustÆ, imbuing the album with this fizzing energy.
██│ This is particularly evident when the band are assisted by British
██│ electronic musician George Fitzgerald, who co-produced the jubilant
██│ æBaby ItÆs YouÆ and æLose Your HeadÆ and brings buzzing late-night
██│ verve to the table. The slinky æMissingÆ, which meshes æ00s R&B with
██│ ambient-pop, also sees the bandÆs ethereal soundscapes shaken up and
██│ coupled with slick electronic beats.
██│
██│ In comparison, the two tracks that bookend the record, æCalifornian
██│ SoilÆ and æAmericaÆ, embrace the more sedate moments of previous London
██│ Grammar releases. æCalifornian SoilÆ is a steady, art rock cut, while
██│ æAmericaÆ channels Lana Del ReyÆs spectacular æNorman Fucking
██│ Rockwell!Æ, ReidÆs distinctive, powerhouse vocals performing gymnastics
██│ over stripped-back guitar twangs and dusky synths.
██│
██│ With Reid now stepping up as the bandÆs leader, London Grammar are
██│ revitalised. While previous album æTruth Is A Beautiful ThingÆ was a
██│ sombre affair, a new energy saturates æCalifornian SoilÆ. Fizzing with
██│ club sounds and filled with bright lyricism, London Grammar are more
██│ confident, and more fun, than theyÆve ever been.
