Unbelievable but true, 2017 is Striborg's 20th anniversary and while Sin
Nanna's output over the last several years since 2011 hasn't been great
compared to the project's first decade of existence, this recent
recording shows he's still as distinctive and idiosyncratic in his style
of coldly atmospheric black metal. The lyrics may be much more personal
and abstract than they were on much earlier albums but they retain
Striborg's misanthropy and strong sense of isolation.
The music is much more noisy and aggressive, and somewhat less melodic,
than I remember - all that time spent playing with folks like Sunn0)))
and Oren Ambarchi over the years has paid off - and with that burning
noise edge and aggression the music here is dramatic and very dynamic.
This is especially so on the long title track where there is an early
passage of unstructured music where keyboard tones arc and soar overhead
like abstract evil shadow predators. Cold ambience ebbs back and forth
while icy vocals compete for attention with cymbal sizzle and boiling
noise guitar. The music has very little melody and serves mainly as a
textural backdrop for Sin Nanna's vocals and the oppressive icy blizzard
atmospheres.
"Dead Inside" is dominated by burning guitar noise drone, a thin simple
percussion beat and shrieking vocals that burn and sizzle just as much
as the guitars do, and this track might just be the highlight of the
album with regard to noisy BM experimentation. "A Ghost Wandering the
Forest at Night" is also very extreme in heavy echoing vocal shrieks,
intense droning keyboard wash and grinding guitar churn. For all the
really intense music presented on this song though, not a lot is
happening apart from all the screaming and the banging synth drums and
cymbals become very monotonous. (Though the monotony does have a very
hypnotic effect.) "Hermetical Desolation" features throbbing percussion
and noise rhythms over which a really pissed-off vocal screams its
hatred for the world as it is.
The album would have been good had it finished with "Hermetical
Desolation" or just a little instrumental piece but instead we have an
awkward cover of an old Siouxsie and the Banshees track "Eve White / Eve
Black" with Sin Nanna's partner Phaedra on lead vocals. While the music
is fine, the singing seems uncomfortable, hesitant and a bit lost
against the steely guitars.
I'd have liked the songs to have been longer and more mesmerising, with
a lot more emphasis on those burning guitar textures and less on the
thin synth drums. I don't understand why Sin Nanna resorted to using
synth drumming here as older Striborg recordings featured much better
percussion work and the experimental, more ambient nature of the music
on this album would have benefited from stronger, thicker-sounding
drums.
On the whole I find most of the music here really very good, with
intense icy blasts of frost atmosphere and sheer loathing and aggressive
hate. There's a lot of energy here and a real sense of the music
straining to its limits and beyond.

I've got the album playing in the background, this is my third or fourth
listen since getting it in the mail. The atmosphere is palpable, and
Striborg has returned to the hissing forests, the murk of Tasmania seeps
as is always has. I'm almost sure that these are mechanical drums played
mostly throughout the album and though not at first, they have grown on
me. The drum beats are varied and well executed, I would consider them
appropriately mixed when it comes to this kind of music, which seems to
be the direction he started in Southwest Passages. I appreciate the
synth work but I don't think it's as well done as it has been in past
albums.
The vocals are excellent and are my favorite aspect of this music, in
their sheer bile. You can feel the spitting and snarling, the vitriol
and disgust. The lyrics are only important to me in serving the gist of
the songs meaning, and the vocals serve as an instrument of their own to
a much higher standard then exactly what he's saying. The lyrics are
fine and all, but it's the usual Striborg affair. Hearing "A Ghost
Wandering the Forest at Night" is a good example, the vocals send chills
down my back, but man, AABB rhyme structure does not look good on paper,
that's just my opinion.
The guitars are muddy but the riffs are good. I find them deceptively
simple, and taking a closer listen reveals well thought out melodies,
and they are sad as FUCK. Repetition works well throughout. Striborg has
always known how to keep a song from being boring to me and this album
is no exception. Sweeping minor chords give way to punky transitions and
on to blast beat frenetics, the engine fires away and I love it.
I have two problems with this album really. They're worth -5 points each
if that makes you feel better. One is that this album is short, and
maybe some people like short(ish) songs but I wanted some epics! This
Suffocating Existence had the title track and it was miserable as fuck!
This album doesn't really have a "standout" track to me....in a good way
at least.
Because I HATE this cover of Eve White/ Eve Black. I don't care if the
musicianship is still good and all, the female vocals kill the whole
atmosphere to me. They're actually badly sung, I think there are two
vocal tracks as if she sang over herself and its dissonant because she
cant hit that note(?). The lyrics aren't their fault but they are
well-enunciated and sound stupid to me. I mean no disrespect to his
wife, she is an excellent artist; a singer she is not, and the screaming
in between it almost makes it worse.
So there. All in all I like it! I'll listen to it again, I'm glad there
is still Striborg music being made, it's some of the finest black metal
i've come across in a long time and I eagerly await the next offering!
