An alumni of Math Rock pioneers Rodan and soft-folk duo
Retsin, Tara Jane O'Neil certainly has some leftfield heritage
propping up her latest solo-venture - with 'A Raveling' a
canny little EP on Acuarela. Opening with 'All Mine Eyes',
O'Neil ferments some thrumming acoustic country with a
cut-glass vocal that is equal parts Shoegaze, Emiliana Torrini
and Lorretta Lynn. Possessed with a beauty that has to be
teased forth rather than arriving fully formed, 'All Mine
Eyes' soon gives way to the wonderful 'Don't Slip'; wherein a
sonorous cello bathes O'Neil in a friable glow as her vocals
are pushed into an echoey hinterland that recalls Julee
Cruise. Elsewhere, 'Pretty D' is as alluring as the title
would suggest and manages to bring a summer breeze to even the
drabbest of environs, whilst 'The Phoenix' takes flight atop
undulating melodies and honey-hushed vocals. Ravel me this!
