█ "Legend has it that Sir Lew Grade was ""given"" █
█ the idea of filming the definitive version of █
█ Jesus Of Nazareth during an audience with Pope █
█ Paul. He later engaged director Franco Zeffirelli █
█ to make the six-hour epic for television and █
█ boldly chose the relatively unknown actor, John █
█ Powell, to play the main role. The choice for the █
█ score was probably easier, as veteran composer █
█ Maurice Jarre already had more than 25 years and █
█ 100 films' experience with epics like Lawrence of █
█ Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and Ryan's Daughter to his █
█ credit. The composer, however, chose to be █
█ influenced by Middle Eastern traditional sounds █
█ rather a pure Hollywood epic score, although some █
█ manages to creep in. The main theme is a beguiling █
█ combination of the majestic and the reverent that █
█ not only sets the scene, but also gives a glimpse █
█ of the variety of themes and moods in the rest of █
█ the album. The early cues have a traditional sound █
█ of Palestine with cues like 'The Three Kings' █
█ using exotic instruments to enhance a beautiful █
█ theme and 'Jerusalem' to generate a solemn hymn. █
█ 'The Miracle Of The Fish' is pure Jarre and has a █
█ delightfully simple sound that is reminiscent of █
█ the composer's Is Paris Burning and Grand Prix █
█ while still retaining an air of Palestine. █
█ 'Salome' is a particular highlight with its █
█ initial slow dance developing into a frenzied █
█ finale. The album has one strange cue with Robert █
█ Powell's voice backed by Jarre's music, at odds █
█ with the commanding music elsewhere on the album. █
█ The album culminates in 'Crucifixion' and █
█ 'Resurrection', both contrasting examples of █
█ Maurice Jarre's powerful composing techniques. █
█ Jesus Of Nazareth is a classic Maurice Jarre █
█ score, although not his finest, perhaps tainted by █
█ the need to regionalise the music and not to █
█ detract from the unassailable story. As with all █
█ Cinephile releases, the album comes with an █
█ informative set of notes giving low-down on the █
█ production history as well as the score in a █
█ foldout sleeve with lots of stills. Based on the █
█ original Pye LP, this is certainly a significant █
█ release for any serious collector." █
