German DJ Stephan Hinz runs two radio shows. The first,
æPlattenlegerÆ airs on two of GermanyÆs most well-respected
stations while the second, æGlobal ScumÆ, can be heard on TurkeyÆs
Dinamo 103.8fm and will soon be available on Proton Radio. Turkish
producer Subsky is music director and production manager at
Dinamo, so the link up on HinzÆs new label should come as no
surprise.
The lead track of the Specdrum EP is æDonÆt Tell Me MoreÆ which
moves away slightly from SubskyÆs traditional ground. The
bassline, kick and foundation percussion work is progressive in
nature but the main melody, comprising of dizzying synths and
stabs, has definite house and electro routes. It is pleasant
enough and will appeal to a more mainstream audience than the
TurkÆs normal work.
æCaterpillarÆ sees Subsky return to more familiar territory, but
with an eye on the housey sounds of æDonÆt Tell Me MoreÆ. It is
not until the middle portion of the track that things start to get
interesting, with a pulsating, earthshaking bassline coming to the
fore and propelling the track into the midst of some clever
percussion work and frenzied piano chords.
æBelaÆ is a rather different affair, more laid back in style and
built around a quirky bassline. Idiosyncratic effects and chords
that initially sound like polar opposites soon wrap themselves
together to create an unusual but strangely likeable melody. It is
hard to see this track getting much airplay but such underexposure
would be an unjust reflection of its quality.
A fair start for the new Global Scum label with three tracks that
will appeal to a wide audience. æDonÆt Tell Me MoreÆ is the most
mainstream of the three; æCaterpillarÆ will appeal to SubskyÆs
traditional fanbase; and æBelaÆ slides off at a tangent all of its
own, but is definitely the most intriguing of the EP.
