It is the proclaimed objective of Luke, to move the concept and the
face of pop music out where it surprises and astonishes, to be
curious and explore the universe. On their debut album therefore you
find an exquisite fusion of bossanova, triphop, rock, reggae, lounge
and electronica, all joined together by the delicate voice of Tanja
Thulau, the heartfelt songwriting of Nikolaj Grandjean and the
curious playful creativity of the musicians Jens Bj°rnkjµr, Bastian
Sjelberg and Mikkel Hess. All respected and skilled members of the
Danish scene. It has taken Luke 2 years of intense work rediscovering
pop.
The music was born and raised in the facilities of Superstar records
in the heart of Copenhagen Denmark, in which process only a few guest
have appeared and contributed to the album, including for instance
members of the Royal Danish Philharmonics who appears on two of the
tracks. (Swedish Per Egdahl who did these arrangement by the way, is
son of the "Court composer" of ABBA). The music is made on classic
vintage gear as well as with modern technology.
The two faces in front, Tanja and Nikolaj, have known each other
through more than 15 years. In the past 8 years Nikolaj has
interpreted Tanjas or their joined life and written the material
aimed directly at this debut. For many years they were a duo, till
the label saw the obvious match and introduced them to the now other
existing half of the Luke family.
Luke is not the traditional Danish band. They are contemporary people
living in a world joined by capitals. The ambition has always been to
create music that reaches beyond Danish "flat foot" culture,
festivals and tired draft beer. This profile is not undeliberately
made. Luke has a wide and talented, most often creative aggressively,
network which they happily and proudly collaborate with throughout
the different processes. That being visuals, art and style etc. Luke
enjoy playing and experimenting and maybe that is why especially
Danish fashion industry has declared their love and interest. Luke
have appeared in just about every Danish fashion/lifestyle magazine.
At the release of the debut album a Danish Bank fell in love and
found prospect in the curious funky track "Left to Right" which they
build a commercial campaign upon. At some point the Bank received an
email pr. minut from people who wanted to know who did the music.
Luke was nominated best Danish newcomer at the official Danish music
awards 2003.
The 2. single of the album "HeavenÆs on Fire" has exceptionally 8
remixes, for instance by "Spanish Fly" (Mary J. Blige, Shaggy, Maria
Carey and Kylie Minogue) and Danish "Filur". This single was chosen
"this weeks inevitable" on Danish p3 radio.
Luke has done 2 beautiful and vivid videos; "Left to Right" and
"HeavenÆs on Fire", this one made by "Ingen Frygt" who was awarded
best video of the year at DMA 2003 for previous work.
Luke have been playing live on many different scenes all over Denmark
in front of enthusiastic audiences.
The album has just recently been published in Russia and is currently
being negotiated in other territories.
