The rise of independent hip hop in recent years, and the
open-mindedness that accompanied it, have lifted somewhat the
boycott long held by American rap against its British counterpart.
If, with some exceptions, England still lacks valuable MCs, some
American rappers have nonetheless realized that the country hides
talented producers.
The main beneficiaries of this early recognition have so far been
the duo The Creators. A collaboration with Lord Finesse, then
Natural Elements and Black Star on "Another World" has largely
promoted the two friends (Simon Gilbert and Julian Baker) to the new
hip hop generation, and boasts multiple collaborations with Mos Def.
Talib Kweli, Dilated Peoples, Lootpack, Mike Zoot, El da Sensei,
Shawn J. Period, Mighty Mi, Consequence and other prestigious names
delivering their first album: The Weight.
The album shows that the Creators have undoubtedly mastered their
subject. The two producers always know how to dress the voice of
their collaborators with sounds to suit them. Once past an intro,
"The Mission" reserved for the turntable Mr. Thing, the
demonstration is made with the bells of "The Music", where El da
Sensei (Redman's cousin, for more information) gives a brilliant
lesson of master of ceremonies. This title is just the first of
other little pearls, like Phil da Agony's "Konkrite" and its
haunting harpsichord, the piano of English Tribel's "WAR" and its
curious pinball-style ending, Out da Ville's "Street Connexions" (
other Englishmen), the strange rhythm of "The Legacy", The Hard
Margin single with Black Star, Lootpack's "The Cypher" which,
Each of these hits proves that the creators have the three qualities
that make good producers: brevity, attention to detail and a taste
for breaks (patent of "Street Connexions"). However, something is
missing, at least in certain titles ... As if, finally, although
personal and recognizable, the duo's sound is too square, too adult,
too academic. The boredom, in fact, is on point. In the "Heart
Pound" of the dilated peoples, to begin with, then in most of the
titles not yet mentioned. A polite, moderate boredom, in which one
forgets and indulges very easily. Almost a routine, in fact.
Reflection and listening, The Creators' success with the more
conservative fringe of American independent rap is hardly
surprising: the latter two, who refuse to be labeled as English hip
hop, remain conventional, as opposed to the grain of madness that
characterizes many other British producers. They have often cut
their teeth on electronic music. This great artistry has a trump
card: the Creators' music is lovingly crafted and flawless,
consistent and solid. No song lends itself easily to criticism.
Undoubtedly a success, however it is to bet that The Weight will be
nothing more, in posterity, than the best album by a lesser group.
