▐▌█ ôMy new album, itÆs kind of like if you gave a caveman a
▐▌█ sampler. ItÆs all about my unconventional approach to
▐▌█ beat-makingà if I were to give it a name IÆd call it
▐▌█ beat-mess.ö So says Che-Fu on the topic of his third
▐▌█ album, the long-awaited Beneath The Radar, a dynamic and
▐▌█ utterly distinctive platter that masterfully showcases his
▐▌█ innovative approach to hip hop. ôKeep an open mind,ö says
▐▌█ Che.

▐▌█ Exactly four years have gone by since Che unveiled The
▐▌█ Navigator, his chart-topping second album of breathtaking
▐▌█ hip hop, funk, reggae and soul. Like its predecessor,
▐▌█ 1998Æs 2b S.pacific, The Navigator spawned a handful of
▐▌█ classic singles, went multi-platinum and earned Che
▐▌█ numerous industry awards and plaudits. But since the hype
▐▌█ and hoopla of that record died down, heÆs been laying low
▐▌█ on a self-imposed exile ù and for a hat-trick of very good
▐▌█ reasons.
▐▌█
▐▌█ ôIÆve got three sons,ö explains Che, ôand my oldest boy
▐▌█ just started school last year. After The Navigator came
▐▌█ out me and my girl sat down and we sussed out that IÆd
▐▌█ been doing music solidly for 12 years. So before embarking
▐▌█ on the next record we thought it would be really good if I
▐▌█ could be around for those early important years with our
▐▌█ kids. It was just a good time to hibernate, so I put the
▐▌█ music away for a while and concentrated on my kids. And I
▐▌█ tell you what, it was really good.ö
▐▌█
▐▌█ While he was taking care of family affairs, Che began
▐▌█ demo-ing tracks for the follow-up to The Navigator. By end
▐▌█ of 2003 heÆd penned a dozen songs and completed
▐▌█ pre-production for Beneath The Radar at his home studio.
▐▌█ At the beginning of the new year, Che booked time at
▐▌█ Beaver Studios in central Auckland, with engineer Shane
▐▌█ Mason (Misfits Of Science, Ermehn) at the controls.
▐▌█ Working at a leisurely pace that allowed for family time
▐▌█ and armed with the production knowledge heÆd gained during
▐▌█ previous album sessions, Che secured exactly the sound he
▐▌█ was seeking for the new record. ôI was a lot more
▐▌█ comfortable with the technology and with controlling the
▐▌█ studio than last time and IÆve worked out that I need to
▐▌█ have a good relationship with the engineer. With the other
▐▌█ records I was ægreenÆ and I just went with whatever
▐▌█ engineer was at the studio that we booked, but as far as
▐▌█ this album goes I went to the studio with a strict policy
▐▌█ of getting a good engineer. Basically, when it comes to
▐▌█ studios I donÆt really mind what gear youÆve got just as
▐▌█ long as the guy thatÆs driving it is cool. And Shane was
▐▌█ very cool.ö
▐▌█
▐▌█ Beneath The Radar was completed earlier this year at York
▐▌█ Street Studios and Che recently spent a week in Sydney
▐▌█ mastering the project at 301. A dozen cuts long, the album
▐▌█ features CheÆs live band the Krates (on the first single
▐▌█ æ2DÆ) and MCs Reborn and Fifth Child (on æMock BattleÆ). A
▐▌█ major highlight on the album has already become a live
▐▌█ favourite, the irresistible pop chimes of æLightworkÆ.
▐▌█ ôThat one is about my view on the whole boast and brag
▐▌█ culture that surrounds a lot of the hip hop and R&B
▐▌█ artists,ö explains Che. ôItÆs mostly an American thing but
▐▌█ itÆs also seeped into the hip hop and R&B here; we seem to
▐▌█ be assimilating the attitudes as well as the music. I see
▐▌█ young people in my neighbourhood and around the city
▐▌█ looking up to that boastful behaviour and not really
▐▌█ realising the consequences of behaving in that manner. I
▐▌█ donÆt think the negative effects of behaving in such a way
▐▌█ have really been addressed, so thatÆs what æLightworkÆ is
▐▌█ about.ö
▐▌█
▐▌█ Another personal favourite of CheÆs is the pseudo-ragga,
▐▌█ broken-beat track entitled æET ResearchÆ. ôThat song seems
▐▌█ to be a tricky one for people to grasp, it takes a lot of
▐▌█ listens. ItÆs a little bit of a puzzle but I kind of give
▐▌█ it away in the second verse when I talk about a guy called
▐▌█ æMr ET ResearchÆ, and then later I allude to his first
▐▌█ name which is æMarkÆ. The song is about advertising and
▐▌█ how those companies base everything they do off market
▐▌█ research, in order to sell the brothers and sisters shit
▐▌█ they donÆt want or need.ö
