Following on from their 2019 and 2020 EPs on Soundway Records, New
Zealand collective Flamingo Pier deliver their debut self-titled
album, featuring euphoric disco hooks, classic house choruses and
forays into Latin funk, balearic and psychedelia.
Like many artists in the last 12 months, they navigated the unfamiliar
territory of intermittent lockdowns to record an album in multiple
locations. While New Zealand has been comparatively safe from the
pandemic, the strict lockdown system has still impacted the local
scene's ability to collaborate, hold performances, or host touring
artists.
For Flamingo Pier, the album is based around the concept of shared joy
- that "by being a source of joy for others, you amplify that joy for
both yourself and those around you, rather than losing anything", says
band member Luke Walker.
The band cities influences on their musical style that include Robyn,
Khruangbin, Roisin Murphy, Masters at Work, Tim Maia and Mildlife.
