         █░█    This is an intense record. Yearling's Bobtail is   █░█
         █░█    a work four years in the making for the            █░█
         █░█    backwardly named band Bobtail Yearlings. The band  █░█
         █░█    mainly consists of Bennett Samuel Lin, who wrote   █░█
         █░█    all 18 songs, performed all instruments and        █░█
         █░█    vocals, and did the great photography and artwork  █░█
         █░█    for the CD.                                        █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    But isn't "intense" a little overdone when         █░█
         █░█    talking about music? Well, this CD is more than    █░█
         █░█    just a CD. For one, the album cover, of a cute     █░█
         █░█    litle Asian boy with a red bandana riding on a     █░█
         █░█    pony (Lin's son, perhaps?) is just the start of    █░█
         █░█    the kind of intimate look we get into the          █░█
         █░█    artist's life. The accompanying photographs are    █░█
         █░█    snapshots from the child's life: packing his bag   █░█
         █░█    while waiting to be picked up from school,         █░█
         █░█    playing around in his classroom, tying his shoes,  █░█
         █░█    and taking a bath. From here we've got an          █░█
         █░█    informative booklet with the song's lyrics that    █░█
         █░█    are especially necessary during the                █░█
         █░█    "doublespeaker rhyme" portions of Yearling's       █░█
         █░█    Bobtail.                                           █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    Doublespeaker rhyme is a newfangled technique in   █░█
         █░█    which Lin sings two different lines of lyrics      █░█
         █░█    that he plays simultaneously. Each line is the     █░█
         █░█    same meter, so they match up and blend together    █░█
         █░█    remarkably well. It's a great exercise in          █░█
         █░█    listening and isolating sounds, as it all doesn't  █░█
         █░█    click until you've got the lyrics right in front   █░█
         █░█    of you.                                            █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    On the surface, Yearling's Bobtail is a fun,       █░█
         █░█    cutesy indie pop accumulation of sounds, but       █░█
         █░█    looking deeper within each song is an epic story   █░█
         █░█    of characters like Odin, Sita, Saskia, and         █░█
         █░█    Catherine. The album seems more like a children's  █░█
         █░█    storybook that shifts between adorable and         █░█
         █░█    sinister. With 18 songs, each lasting over 4       █░█
         █░█    minutes, it's a strangely, personal compilation    █░█
         █░█    of experiences from Mr. Lin that deservedly took   █░█
         █░█    four years to make.                                █░█
