Because of some record label mumbo-jumbo, the Get Up Johns had to
wait a year to finally see their debut CD released this week.
What's another 12 months, though, when many of the songs that
you're playing date back to early in the previous century?
"It's not as if we're in a genre of music where we need to hurry
to fit in with the flavor of the month," quipped Josh Wenck,
guitarist in the sweet-harmonizing country-gospel duo.
Since their coming-out gig for the Heartbreak & Harmony series at
the Turf Club in 2004, Wenck and his dueting partner Jake Hyer
have become the hippest old-timey act in town.
They made it into First Avenue's best new bands showcase last
year. Now, the duo will hosted a coolly designed CD-release party
at the Varsity Theater, with an in-the-round configuration and a
lineup including Spider John Koerner and Mike Gunther & His
Restless Souls.
Playing to hipster crowds doesn't exactly sell the GUJs'
authenticity, but the new CD should. Titled "Trouble in Mind,"
it's full of traditional mountain and/or cotton-field songs,
including "Midnight Special," the title track and "Cluck Ol' Hen,"
plus two originals.
The duo's razor-sharp, one-microphone harmonizing style --
recalling great brotherly acts like the Louvins, Stanleys and even
the Everlys -- has the timeless appeal of a hay ride. Their all-
acoustic instrumentation, including the occasional fiddle, gives
the voices room to soar.
"I got chills the first time we sang together," Wenck said. "We
just fit."
While Hyer, 26, can claim a regional tie to their music thanks to
his West Virginia upbringing, Wenck, 30, comes from the less-than
-mountainy suburb of Plymouth. However, Wenck said, "Jake grew up
listenging to AC/DC like the rest of us."
They can always learn more about their music of choice, but the
Johns already know what's most important.
"We try not to be too intellectual or by-the-book," Wenck said.
"We're more about the gut feeling." (startribune.com)
