Hello Stranger formed in 2003 when Los Angeles natives Joachim Cooder and
Juliette Commagere met Jared Smith, who had arrived in Los Angeles by train,
from Upper Michigan. Joachim is the son of legendary guitarist Ry Cooder, who
produced the album. Unlike the children of successful artists who try and
separate themselves from their parents, Joachim and his father have always
worked together closely. Hello StrangerÆs album is no exception. The band had
already contributed their songwriting and playing skills to RyÆs latest
recording, ôChavez Ravineö and could not decline when he offered to help with
their record. The result encompasses everything from a stripped down love song,
to a tongue-in-cheek tirade about growing up in L.A., to a wild dance hit sung
in Spanishùa nod to JulietteÆs half-Mexican heritage. As Hello Stranger's record
comes out, they, along with their new bassist Ben Messelbeck (ex-Mighty Six
Ninety) embark on a national tour. It is up to the country (and next the world)
to decide how big they can get.
